Tewkesbury Floods.

Here is my first picture post taken this weekend in Tewkesbury.

At the moment Tewkesbury has turned into several islands most of which are cut off from any roads out.

Tewkesbury Abbey.




Taken from Mythe Hill looking south. The red brick buildings are part of Severn Trent's water treatment works which should be providing clean water to most of Gloucestershire. Slightly to the right of that is the River Severn.



Five RAF Seaking's were overhead for most of the day. Those fine folks from the RNLI and the Fire Brigade were also kept busy.

Most of the shops are closed or have sold out of the important stuff. I did manage to pick up the new Harry Potter on saturday so at least i will have something to do while i starve/dehydrate to death.


I know, let's build on a flood plain!?!

The TV pictures have been increadable. I felt really guilty having come back from a great days paddling yesterday to see the TV news.

it amazes me that a millenium ago the wiae old monks were shrewd enough to build their abbey on a raised bit of land!! when you are at the abbey it is only a foot or so above the rest of the town, but that makes all the difference.

This may not have been to avoid flood water, but to dominate the skyline and ensure the local peasantry knew that they had been conquered by a superior race - or maybe they just built the Abbey so tall in the glory of God.

I just got power back in my place in Gloucester, but we've got no water. I'm at home with the flu, but did have a quick wander yesterday evening to try and find out what's going on - everyone seems to be gearing up for the Severn to come over the lock gates and into Gloucester Docks. Makes for nice pics tho!

All's peaceful in the docks, hopefully it'll stay that way!

Lock between the Severn and the Avon is just behind the trees. The Avon is on the right and to the left is the channel that joins the main part of the Severn.

The floods are terrible and the photos give some idea of what people must be experiencing. I got caught up in the traffic chaos as I drove back to the Black Isle from Wiltshire on Friday night. It took me 24 hours to get home but at least I got home and it is warm and dry!

My sister living in Alcester was not so lucky (along with hundreds of others in the town) and she was severely flooded and has lost loads of precious family stuff. Insurance will never bring this back for her.

You know folks, this is serious stuff! The climate is definitely changing and we will have to face many other challenges like this and other experiences in the years to come. I guess the key is not to get despondent and to enjoy what do have - our rivers and lochs, the ocean, and our canoes!

My best wishes to anyone on SOTP who has been affected by the flooding.

Flood levels in Gloucestershire have gone down a fair bit today.

Could have no tap water for up to two weeks though

If you hear screaming later that will be me washing in my cold bath.

I live in Alcester and this was the flooding in the High street area. I wasn't affected but so many people & small businesses were badly hit, many of the shops will be shut for some time. The water has subsided now but it is sad to see people piling their wrecked possessions on the street.

I found that this thread has been linked to from a BBC page of bloggs etc. So some visitors to this thread might be surprised to find out that the access to the waters normally are so restrictive.

freelance photographer based in London and am doing a series of
portraits (to be published as a feature story in The Independent) of
people who have been affected by the recent floods (i.e. their homes
damaged/destroyed, their work place flooded and they were unable to
work as a result).
I would be very grateful of you could possibly let me know whether you
might know/recommend anybody who have been unfortunate to have been affected and
who might be willing to take part.
