Question What does reputation earn you?

I often use the star at the bottom left of posts to add to the poster's reputation when I agree with what they said and feel that me "me too" post would be a waste of space. But I wonder what the point of it is.

Does the person whose reputation I'm increasing get notified?
What do they do with their reputation score - how does it help them?
    Should I continue doing this?

Sorry if this has been explained somewhere else; I did search for reputation and found nothing enlightening.

Has anyone been notified of getting rep points.

I see Lloyd and Santa have shedloads.

I've never noticed it before. I'm only interested in the message and once I've read it I'll move on to the next one.

You don't get notified but you do get SOTP gift certificates in the mail every year that are only redeemable on Iceland's Deep Pan Donor Kebab Pizza and Trekking Mahlzeiten canned hamburgers.

I've just added to Uncle Lloyds reputation for the above post and apparently I might just receive some "reputation" back in return!

Seems like a load of ..er....rubbish to me

The Volvo forum I use has a similar function that works quite well.
Below a comment, multiple people can put in a thanks. It doesn't take up much room or bump a thread.
I have been tempted to make it a suggestion for this forum but I'm not sure if it could be embedded in it's web pages.

As a veggie, can any reputation I may have, be shared out among the meat eaters. I wouldn't want them to miss out on the deal.

Can't believe you don't know - for every reputation, you get points. And what do points make ........??

and they have the 'THANKS' icon, Its good if you find the post useful but do not need to add more to it.
Its quite nice to see the thankyou's.
I recently stole a thread from SOTP regards a link to a petition to remove the VAT payments from fuel used by the Air Ambulances..no reply needed but the thankyou's came in! Im going off to check if the petition is still going and re-start it if so! TB

Click your 'my profile' button, then click the members list on the left hand side, then click the reputation column header.

It will set the reputation by amount and by users name.

If you scroll all the way down until you find your name, you will have some idea how much rep you have.

Brilliant comment, TGB! I've added to your reputation in appreciation of it!

(I'm now conujuring up mental images of a mushroom so big that no human could live long enough to stuff it! But I know that's not what you meant!)

... Followed the instructions from #23, can't see any reputation points ... even for LLoyd ... have they all gone

Can sort on reputation ... even though I can't see any ... and the members order changes ... so there must be some somewhere?

Just tried clicking the star on one of my own posts too ... hmm ... I also have 11 ... so maybe we've found the reset to 11 button

I wonder what'll happen if I press it again ....

OK .. I pressed it ... I still have 11 ... and then I just went mad with power and pressed Keltoi's button too ... he's now got 12

As I understand it; in order to gain reputation you need to be a surly airbag heretic who defends seal hunting and pokes fun at vegetarians. Basically disagree with everyone on the forum...

I am just as confused as you?

I had never paid any attention to the whole reputation thing until this thread appeared. When, on a mere whim, I added to TGB's reputation in one of the above posts, it was the first time I had ever added to anyone's reputation. Having nothing better to do, (I am rapidly becoming bored witless, convalescing after a knee operation on Wednesday ), I followed the instructions for finding out what my reputation was worth, and I was amazed to find that I am in fifth place, with 49 points! This is really surprising, because most of my posts are pure tosh and ignored by the vast majority of the membership!

The other facility on the forum that intrigues me is the thread-rating system of 1 - 5 stars. According to the key, five stars mean 'Excellent' and one star means 'Terrible'. Yet the vast majority of the threads have no stars at all! What does that mean? What is worse than 'Terrible'?

It's a good job we're all too grown-up to take this stuff seriously!

It could be as in "Beautiful as the moon, Terrible as an army with banners". As in the Biblical sense...

Worse than terrible is probably "good enough". As Boris Godunov was good enough, but not as good as Ivan the Terrible.

Anyway Rocky, when I looked you had 2642 reputational points.

I'll get my coat and fur hat...

No, your number of posts is not the same as your number of reputation points. To find out how many reputation points you have accumulated, you have to find one of your own posts and click on the star in the bottom left-hand corner. It then tells you how many point you have. I have 49. You can't be far behind, because I think you are in seventh place.

    Found it.

Your reputation and who gave you the last points is listed on your "Settings" page - the link is right at the top, on the right of this and each forum page.

Thank you Fran and Potty Paddler!
