Thread: Tuition

  1. #1

    Default Tuition

Would very much appreciate (sure other newbies would also) a list of places to get some tuition around the country

If any of you have a 'school' near you perhaps you wouldn't mind posting their details....

I'm sure this has been covered before but I couldn't find a 'sticky' type list anywhere......

    Thanks

You're very welcome to have a browse of my website to get a feel of the type of things I offer. These range from BCU skills courses, safety training, beginners and improvers tuition and wilderness skills.

Did I mention the discounts for you as a SOTP member?

    Thanks for looking.
    Very best regards,

Below is a list of people whom I am happy to recommend as I am confident of the quality of delivery you will get. They all happen to be L5 coaches.

    Scotland -
Dave Rossetter (his company - Standing Waves and runs Stirling and Nevis Canoes)
    Claire Knifton

    Wales
    Dave Luke
    Ray Goodwin
    Leo Hoare

    England
    Ken Hughes
    Terry Hailwood
    Kim Bull
    Gareth Field

Most L5 coaches will work 1:1 for about £170.00 a day. (But you may need to book quite a way ahead or join a pre-programmed course in order to get to work with them).

There are also the national centres - Plas Y Brenin and Glenmore Lodge, both have excellent staff.

If you go to the BCU website there is a list of canoe clubs in your area. You might find someone to help you there. Make sure they are current and up to date though.

I've added Phil and Kelvin to Wilf's list, as my recommendations.

For SWWC coaching see the thread http://www.songofthepaddle.co.uk/for...boat-spec-boat - that lists all the SWWC coaches.

    Did you mention yourself Wilf

MB depends what level of "tuition" you are looking for, there are plenty of canoe clubs around with some good coaches, you can find a list in your area on the BCU website.

If you are after some specialist coaching then contact the "professionals" I am sure that they will all be pleased to help.

    Hi Magic Bus

have you tried your local canoe club if you have one ??

I'm currently going through my level 2 with my local club, and as I'm a member no cost

Once that's done, I'm onto my level 3

They've even paid for my FSRT training with the BCU, with the hope that I will eventually gain my level 1 coaching award and put some time back into the club, which I'm only too glad to do

    happy paddling

Complete novice. Spent only 30 minutes in a canoe ever. Finally launched the Mega this week ......

I'm not concerned about 2 star this and that, nor do i really want to get involved with a 'club', just want to learn the basics for safety reasons.

Its very difficult for me to make arrangements in advance,as I'm self employed and never know what I'm doing or where I will be more than about a week in advance. If I get a suitable free day I'd like a list to enable me to ring around looking for last minute vacancies.

    Hello magic bus,
Are you sure you need this professional/very expensive tuition. I bet you could join a local club for a fraction of the tuition fee, go on some trips with them and pick up enough free help and advice on paddle strokes and safety and the many other aspects of open boating that you won't learn on a star course. You just won't have a piece of paper to prove it. Most paddlers are only too pleased to offer guidance. maybe worth a thought.

I first started paddling in spring last year when I bought a Prospector 15. As my aim was to take my children paddling on the Ardeche that summer I decided that the best course of action was to get a canoe coach to give me one to one coaching to give me the confidence to shoot grade 2 rapids safely in my boat. After a day of one to one I was then coached with my little girl in the boat over a grade 2 rapid. Expensive it may have been but well worth it as we had the best holiday ever (and my kids said so!) and no misshaps all 8 days of paddling. I did the same when I got my SWWC in order to start me off on the right lines.

You are a bit unfortunate though if all your days are so 'last minute' as the best coaches will tend to be booked well in advance unless you are very lucky!

If it is during the week, we normally have a coach available as most people like weekend courses, there should be one of us available if you want to come over?

I'm in the same boat (OK, mine is my new Charles River)

I have spent the last couple of weeks searching the net for basic beginner flat water (lake or canal) canoeing instruction, and without real success. I do get turned off immediately when the web site opens with a photo that shows severe white water stuff, or canoe clubs that would put me straight into hairy rivers in a baptism of fire (or water). Nope... I don't want to start in the winter in the Wye, Usk or Severn with water running like an express train.

I live in Gloucestershire, but I wouldn't mind travelling, with canoe and kit, to get tuition from the right person. If I could locate a suitable person who would provide me with good, very sound, basic beginner flat water instruction. Surely there must be some around?

Have you asked at your local canoe supplier who the good coaches are? They will have a fair idea and may even be able to help out themselves.

Due to me canceling an FSRT, I'm free this Tuesday if you wish to come to sunny North Yorkshire.

I'm also happy to help too. At the end of the day it is what the client wants with a little bit of what the coach suggests linked to some kind of action plan for where to go next...

I'm out of the country until mid May then available in the North of England, Lakes area or willing to travel further North over the border if required.

I'll do that when the weather gets better.....

Did I mention I dropped it before it ever saw water? I slipped on a wet railway sleeper and it dropped onto concrete steps. The noise it made made me cry more than the pain in my elbow, but the damage was a flake of paint lifted the size of a 5p.... very lucky

We've had 30 minutes around a fairly unfriendly Weston Turville lake so far which was nice, but already we've felt the resentment of a local sailing club who couldn't understand why we were on 'their' water. We'd checked with British Waterways and the sailing club secretary, but still met with hostility. Hard to believe the factions of the boating fraternity can be so opposed to others enjoying the water.

So if anyone has a BW license and fancies a paddle on Weston Turville I'd be pleased to join you.

I highly recommend the Tring Summit level section of the Grand Union for some straight-forward paddling. It's beautiful any time of the year, access is easy, you are covered with a BCU licence, it's very sheltered and there is a long stretch without locks. I used to live in Aston Clinton before migrating to the northern wilderness and it was our favourite local paddle - in a Birch Creek boat by the way, the same mould as a Mega.

I did not know that you could paddle on Weston Turville res, I would be interested in a bit of sailing. (in my canoe) give us a shout when going there next. Marlow canoe club runs courses which is not a major trip from this area, and have a decent numbers of open boaters, of which I am one, I find the Thames an interesting river, and you don't have to battle through the undergrowth as on the Wendover arm, although it can be a nice little paddle in the winter.
