Default Benny Gaarde tortured wood canoes

    Hi

Has anyone built one of these tortured wood canoes. I am looking for a cheap, simple canoe for two adults, to use on lakes and slow flowing rivers around Ireland.

have you tried toturing ply before? i have had some experience, and it is not easy, granted I am not experienced, but I ahev had a go. I wouold personally opt for a stitch and glue.

Lord John recently sold something similar to make way for his new apache

I think his neigbour builds them, worth asking.
It all started with a folding boat I built at school...

My experience with tortured ply was torture!!! the language (or so I'm told) was awful. If I were an octopus, then perhaps it would have been easier. I was working with a 12 year old who didn't have the strength to hold things while I clamped, and couldn't operate clamps fast enough while i held things in place. My advise would be stitch and glue every time

The Selway Fisher Beaver uses a combination of Tortured ply and S and G - the tortured ply bit is quite easy and produces a nice shape. Had a disaster with my build when partly done as the polyester resin failed when the boat got blown aroud the garden in a gale!!
Note to self 1) Dont use polyester 2) Find better shelter!!!
    Good luck!

I'm hoping to build a canoe using the methods in the link you posted combined with the plans/method in this link

    http://www.svensons.com/boat/?p=RowBoats/glide_easy

I've made my own drawings and gone as far as to make two 1/12 scale models from cornflake packets. Hopefully when the weather is warmer I'll buy ply and see if my plans work full size.

Do you know of any other Benny Gaarde canoe designs?
