    Not suitable for canoes as it is owned and managed by the Water Board and off limits to the public for boating. A great area for a walk though, as it is in the heart of the Mourne Mountains.

    One of the very few places I have ever felt connected to my past!

    My Grandfather was one of the original group of navvies who made this amazing dam, walking across the hills daily from his home, a twelve hour day and then back home again. Tough man, tough life, tough all round!

    I keep hearing whispers that this is a great place to camp but I've never tracked down exactly where. Shame you can't canoe - there would be a wonderful irony to taking your canoe up a mountain for a paddle..

    And the surrounding wall is, I think the longest drystone wall in the British Isles. (Hadrians wall has mortared joints)
