    Default Big(ish?) Meet 2019 Suggestions

    Hi All,

Thought I'd start the convo this year, to see if anyone wanted to pick up the mantle of organising a big meet, and if not, put forward the suggestion of another Barrow-Upon-Soar Biggish meet.

Although I'm pretty sure paddlers will keep the use of the field one way or another, at the moment I believe Colin only officially has it for this year, so there is a potential risk we may lose access laters, so if there were no takers for organising it kinda made some sense to utilise it whilst we do have its use.

I've pinged tentative enquiries to Colin and the farmer with the adjacent field we hired in 2017 around the weekend of Aug 17-18th (the w/e before the bank hols) - both have given the thumbs-up, so ours if we want to go ahead.

Quite a few peeps will have been to Barrow, but for those that haven't, we normally do a 11-12mile loop paddle on the Sat, with options from 2-8+ miles loops on Sun, all flat(ish) < grade 1 rivers and canals. No car shuttling, just arrive pitch and paddle as and when you want. Plenty of blogs/photos from pervious Barrow based events and there are certainly loads of photos & and few vids on the 2017 Bigish Meet Blog

Cost would be in the £12-£15 range (mostly for hire of loos & second field use) for the w/e per adult with options for 1,2,3, or more nights.

No idea yet whether the Boathouse Pub will be open, but there is another one 50 odd yards away, as well as a couple of convenient Indian food alternatives.

Anyway as mentioned at the beginning, this thread is really just a starter to see who and what's out there, so don't be shy, feel free to add comments, suggestions and/or volunteer to org alternatives.

    Over to you ....

We might be able to make this but who knows. I’ll keep my eye on the thread and our diary to see how it pans out.

It was fun last time, if the dates suit we might bring beer coolers and release the crocodile.

Thanks all for the quick responses :-).

Although I'm happy to organise a Barrow meet, this thread is really to see if anyone has alternative suggestions for dates/places they fancy coordinating. I know peeps have mantioned a return to say Bala, which I would certainly endorse, as Bala was my first few Big Meets and I've great memories therefrom.

is it open to everyone ?
Pretty much yes, regardless of where it is held/who sets-up, the Big Meet is traditionally open to all, peeps who attend do so based on their assessment of their ability to stay upright etc. The only real limiting factor is available camping space - I think at Barrow we're limited to maybe around 60-70 people - although I think there was space for a few more people in the adjacent hired field.

bring beer coolers and release the crocodile.
Awsome, much fun to be had there on and in for the lighter peeps amongst us.

Please keep thoughts, ideas, suggestions acomin'

I'm free that weekend. I'm sure my skipper Autumn wouldn't let me go without her.

i too really enjoyed the Bala meets, but if no one wants to organise, then barrow is a good choice, central for everyone!
if it goes ahead let me know if I can help out anyway

    Hi All,

Thanks for all the positive responses and offers of help - I'll leave the door open for another week or so, just in case someone else does fancy org-ing something somewhere else.

Possibly preempting slightly but anyone care to suggest a theme?

Any feedback from participants in 2017 to improve for 2019 - how did you feel about numbers of peeps, camping space, number of loo's etc.

Is there room for a trailer tent? If so Mrs Rimfire and I think we might make it, Ill bring my song book.
yup. Plenty of space in the adjacent field we hire - with permission we take down a section the adjoining fence so peeps can drive/walk straight through.

in spite of the really long paddle against gale force winds.....
Alas the biggest risk in any such event is the weather - but deffo in 2017 the great peeps attending far outweighed the breeze!

Hi Jon, not sure how many attended in 2017, but there was plenty of room in the top field for plenty more!
not sure about a theme, but I think a boat/ camping jumble may be a good idea.

If I can't make it, I think the theme should be Teatotal Veganism

If I do make it, perhaps just random fancy dress, including canoes of course.

If I'm not in Scandinavia, I would be happy to go back to what I did for some previous Bala Big Meets, and do a communal meal one evening, for up to about 25 (with an assistant and as many borrowed pots and stoves as we can get!). Spag Bol, Chinese or similar. On a not-for-profit payment basis.

Well done Mr Cankay, I'm sure it's a largely thankless task, but you do have a habit of organising such good dos...

Will definitely attend Barrow with family in tow, would also attend Bala possibly sans le minions if it was there. Barrow is a rather convenient spot however.

Being relatively local and relatively freelance, with enough warning I can make myself available to help set up etc, just let me know.

With regards to a theme, could we perhaps have a change from the usual "paddling-into-the-wind-all-day-even-though-the-route-is-a-circle" theme?
I refuse to let the fact that I haven't got a clue what I'm doing hold me back.

ok so not specific to Big meeting thoughts, but I was pootling around the Quorn and Mountsorrel loops yesterday.... and nice surprise moving from the GUC to the Soar just SE of Mountsorrel/Waterside Inn, where the footbridge, iron railings, weir are, someone has been along with a saw and done a great job of improving back access to the river....

Previously this was a drag through some bushes, and precarious launching.

Speaking of the Waterside - they do a very nice Chicken and Bacon salad

I did Strava both loops, and total distance is closer to 6 miles than 8 - options North and South to make it longer, but these loops are the 'normal' Sunday paddle.

Naturally, if I can be of any assistance here....
    Just name your weopon/s!
Please note that 4th pot on the right can now be supplied with a lid if required. Which also doubles-up rather nicely as (a charity shop bought £2.50) 2-3 person enamel Paella dish ..and if you require a lid for the large pot, stage left....then any old galvanised dustbin lid will do, which you could probably acquire en route!? )

Can't commit to the above dates at present, but now very much working on it. In the mean time, please put me down for a Spag Bol Vintage Bala 2012 (With 'the Spag' bit being replaced by 'pasta shapes', for want of a better word, at the last mo' and accompanied with one of the best Bolognese sauces that I've ever had the pleasure of - Seriously....it was good!

Just let me know what you need as far the iron works go.

CHeers MBJ. As I said at the start, it depends on when we go to Finland or wherever, but would definitely like the load of a pot or two IF the date works for us both.

Leaving the door w i d e open for other suggestions for organiser, venue, dates, themes for another couple of days... but I guess from this weekend, if peeps are generally happy with the Barrow suggestion, I'll start the ball a-rollin' more formally.

    Ok, lets do this.

Firstly, and with appologies to Mark, there has to be a date, and the w/e before the banks hols kinda worked in 2017, and maybe that weekend can become an annual target, so we are looking at Aug 17-18th.
Themewise, alas much as I would like a wind-at-yer-back loop, I think we'll need to be thinking along the lines of Movies/TV shows - not massively original, but plenty of scope for those whom want to particpate.

Depending on numbers we're prob looking at no more than £15 incl 2 nights camping (+£1 per night extra).

Here is some information about the weekend and trips from 2017.

There deffo looks to be a possibility of some group feeding Sat evening in addition we'll look to run an optional 'bake off', similar to 2017, it's a nice way for peeps who want to, to contribute a bit of something to the general eatery.

I'll start a new thread on SOTP shortly for actual event, and normal names list, and use this thread for any questions, ramblings, ideas etc.

Thanks all for initial interest and support!.
    Jon

No probs, you're most welcome to join me/us any time. I'll be at Barrow next weekend for the 6th and final race of the 2018-2019 series - feel free to pop by to paddle or just say "hi". Hopefully (and weather dependent), I'll be doing at least one day on the Dove Tour (Burton on Trent) the following weekend, no immediate plans thereafter but I try to get out at least a couple of times a month.

Random thought - perusing the Meeting/Trips/Social section we're at 3954 threads - thats 3954(ish) trips organised or at the very least promoted through SOTP - which is pretty cool! If we can get a few more organised betwixt now and Aug - then the Big Meet 2019 could be pretty close to the 4000th event...

Illumin8 Training Ltd. Would like to provide the raffle prizes
Cheers Bren, that's a very generous offer :-), and more than happy to accept a few bits and pieces. We've also got a few ideas on the go, and it's also an wee opportunity for anyone else who wants to contribute a little something extra to the meet ( - in addition to optional paddling, music, socialising, drinking, baking, eating, singing, movie/tc theming etc :-) )

I was at Barrow a few weeks ago and there were definite signs of reworking, may well pop up this weekend and will be nosey of I do. I've had a third/forth hand suggestion that some initial discussion has been had with regard to paddler-friendliness, that did no sound too encouraging, but massively early days and nothing specific/reliable. The outside loo block is definitely gone, but we'll have portaloos onsite anyway.

For the big meet though the field we use for camping is still leased by Colin, and we have agreed with a local farmer for utilising an adjacent field (with a bit of fence removal/replacing).

The Soar Bridge Inn on the other side of the main road has been very accommodating with the Barrow Race series, and I've already pre-empted the possibility of some of us eating there on Friday.

If I hear anymore I'll add details as and when.

Popped up on Sunday for a spot of wobbly SUPping - the Pub is deffo not open for business yet, but there were peeps clattering about and working on the building.
