Default River Wey or Basingstoke Canal - 11th or 12th Jan 2019

    Hi all

I'll be paddling Friday the 11th or possibly Saturday 12th (or both) and wondered if anyone was up for a gentle trip - 10am start with a lunch stop?
Weather looks overcast, but dry and winds light (on Friday anyway).

    Three options spring to mind...
1 - Gresham and Priory loops on the Wey (I haven't done the mill portage or priory weir before, so would benefit from an old hand).
2 - Guildford meadow from Shalford (I've not done the backwater loop downstream, so again, an old hand would be, well...handy. Otherwise, it's a bit of a short paddle).
3 - Odiham from Winchfield - luncheon at the castle.

Apologies for all the options. I'll refine it a bit if there are any takers (with preferences).

    Hi Jim,

I was planning on a paddle with AdrianO over the weekend so not 100% sure where atm. Will confirm a bit later in the week but tempted by the Gresham and Priory loops which i have paddled several times. It will be another 2hr drive for Adrian though...

    Jim,
I could be up for a splash about on Saturday (Friday is unlikely for me at the mo) I have paddled St Catherine's backwater down to the meadow numerous times and have done the Gresham loop in full once with Maj, Peter, Et al. I've paddled it upstream on my todd when I did the Priory. Old hand I am not, but should be able to remember the get outs/ins and the iffy bits.

Much as BYT said I am up for paddle on Sat 12th. I think I have done most of the Wey routes so would be my choice.

Always up for a gentle paddle and lunch as it is the best wey to be!

    Chaps. Thanks for the replies.

Maj - it'd be good to see you if you are up for it, but understand if you're heading further afield.

Mal - another time. Have a good weekend wherever you may be and I hope it involves a canoe and/or a tent.

Colin - Excellent. I noticed on another thread that you're stricken with man flu. Hopefully, it'll be just a bad memory by Saturday.

Nick - I don't believe we've met, so it'd be grand to do so on Saturday.

How about the Gresham and Priory loops on Sat 12th then? 10am from the tannery with grub at Woking Palace? I've also done both upstream, but not the portages or the Priory weir get in. I've just made a detachable yoke which I might test out instead of the tussocky trolley run.

I'm still supporting team Thermos (with sarnies), but will happily sniff your frying steaks if you prefer a proper cook up.

I think I'm off to the Monow for the weekend, but if it is called off I could be up for the Friday paddle. Sat is a famous dinghy race, not competing, the Bloody Mary at Queen Mary Sailing Club

I've literally just arranged (5 minutes ago) to go walking with someone on the Friday now. I'm sorry about that. Hopefully, your weekend trip will be on anyway, but I would be up for a paddle the following Friday (18th). Fridays are usually good for me.

    Jim,

I'm hoping I will be OK in a day or so; I really need to get out for a paddle. Perhaps if I am not 100% by the weekend, I'll just put-in at the boathouse and have a bob around and play on the flash.

Colin - fingers crossed the bug retreats. I recommend hot whisky.

Peter - Have a good trip and I'll see you on the water soon.

    So, for the Wey on Sat 12th we have;
    Jim
Colin (if the lurgy has gone)

Lets try for Friday the 18th Wey, Thames, Mole, Basingstoke canal. If the Abbey Stream is clear its a nice circle.(see my post), The Sunbury Stream might be inspected tomorrow by me. Or even St Pats

Looks like there might be the odd splash of light rain on Saturday, but warm rain by recent standards.

Peter, I should certainly be up for something on Friday 18th. We can hatch a plan nearer the time.

    Hi John

You'd be most welcome. Yes, it's 10am at the Tannery in Send and it looks like there will be 6 of us...if Colin has kicked his bug into touch.

    Boy's,

The lurgy has cleared enough for me to just about be fit enough to drag boats across bouncy fields.

Yet once again my plans to paddle seem to be thwarted at every turn as it now looks like I shall be working !!!

If I can wiggle things about then I will but it is looking unlikely.

Sod's law strikes, Colin. That's a shame. I'm pleased you're on the mend though. I'm sure there'll be a next time very soon. Meanwhile, whenever you're next heading to the flash for a pootle about, let me know and I'll join you if I'm around.

That's a pity Colin, still the weather might be kinder next time ??

Jim - If its OK Graham (Red Eye) my bow man will be coming along to do the heavy lifting and extra cooking.

See you all tomorrow - Nick

    The more the merrier, Nick.
It might be a little breezy, but hopefully the rain won't happen.
    See you tomorrow

Many thanks for a superb day Jim, always nice to explore another waterway and see new features like the abbey! Safely ensconced in the bath now, with a promise of a lecture later... Great to see everyone else and I thoroughly enjoyed dinner at the palace, shame Queenie wasn't home.

Great to meet you and Ann and I'm pleased you both enjoyed the day. The weather was kinder than I expected too.

My pleasure, Adrian. It was great to meet new faces and it was an excellent convivial, paddle. May there be many more.

Bath sorted, it's now time for a curry. A blog will appear in the next few days when I have a moment.

It was good to see you. It all went to plan and was a great day on the water. Thanks for the photo link. The blog is in progress and will appear in the next day or two and I'll definitely use some of your photos.

Glad you all had a good day. Though not entirely sure it should be allowed when I'm enjoying myself elsewhere

Glad you enjoyed being elsewhere! You need to install a cake toll box near Gresham Mill, so whenever people paddle the route in your absence, a baked offering is left for you
