Default 1st Thursday of the month evening meet - River Wey 6th December

    Hey folks,

As discussed during Friday night's excellent Full Moon paddle, suggestion for the next one.

    Thursday 6th December

Bridge at Shalford on the River Wey.

    6pm meet for 6.15ish paddle.

As it will be dark, the intention would probably be just to paddle down to Guildford and back, portaging St Catherine's Lock each way, as tree dodging down the backwater in the dark might be too interesting!

I should be able to make it.

Is the plan to pause at the meadow for munchies or are we just paddling ??

I will try to remember to bring the sociable pies this time instead of just leaving them next to the kettle at home !!

If Plan A goes ahead, I will have been on the Dee the day before, but Plan B should see me there.

Would it be ridiculous / silly / dangerous / just plain stupid or all of those to give it a go ??

Erm, I was reserving judgement until I knew who'd be coming! Have to say, I quite fancy it, I know it pretty well, but it will need very slow flow thanks to those tree blockages we know about, and any new ones. However, potentially its dangerous, potentially its stupid, and definitely silly. So therefore something to try with the right folk and the right attitude to daftness v caution.

Its really a question of potential outcome. Rough water you can fall in swim, someone will grab the boat, no real worries. Strainers in the dark with even a gentle flow, real risk of being tipped in, caught in the strainer, unable to get out. I've done some silly things in my time, and might just be starting on another, but I'm not paddling a river with the risk of fallen trees etc in the dark.

Of course you are right, Peter. We could have a drama-free, gentle paddle on a lovely stretch of river but there is real potential for it all to go pear shaped. With quite predictable consequences for those involved and unnecessary risk to those who might be tasked with rescue and recovery.

The backwater thing is pretty unlikely, would need really low flows and a clear night plus small group. Either way, though, we'll have fun.

We might even burn stuff in fireboxes?

The backwater is certainly more interesting, we could always split up and meet at the meadow in Guildford... just a thought.

Can't make this one unfortunately Mal, as I'll be in the deepest darkest depths of Dorset by the time that you guys are just about to wet your paddles....

    Would have been there otherwise!

    Have a good 'un!
Keep yer paddles wet, and powder dry....

Its raining tomorrow and the river levels look fairly high in Woking anyway.

Are we still up for this folks?

Err, yes, or course! Levels haven't yet changed much, and when did we let rain stop us! Won't be doing the backwater loop, though, want to look at it in daylight after all the wind and rain.

I'm not overly concerned by a bit of "light rain" but work might now be a problem for me; this week's job very much not going to plan.

Sadly Angie is under the weather at the moment so we won’t be able to make it tonight, hopefully I’ll catch up with most of you on Saturday, have a good paddle.

Gonna be a bit of a frantic rush but I should be able to make it.

(Why don't I sort my gear out when I come back from a paddle, then it'd be ready ???)
