Thread: Side mounted mast?

  1. Default Side mounted mast?

I read an article and can't seem to find it anymore.
It talked about mounting the mast on the side of the boat instead of the center.
Does anyone know the technical name of this style, so I can do some research on it ?

    Thanks

The technical name is "bizarre". Sorry, I couldn't resist.

On a small narrow boat I wouldn't like it due to the problems sheeting in the sail properly and supporting the mast well.
    Should work much better centered.

I don't know an actual technical name.

The only craft I know with a single none central mast is a Proa, but you area heading down a whole complex but very interesting design route with that

There is a view that proas are symmetrical, just not about the usual axis, this the mast is indeed on the Centreline.....

True, in a pure mathematical definition of symmetry the hull of a proa does indeed have an axis of symmetry. However with the rig in its usual position it looses the symmetry but that is just splitting hairs.

    Google bought me here...https://sailstrait.wordpress.com/other-boats/.

It was really bugging me as I discussed offset mast a few years ago and I can't remember the details...

Default Side mounted Masdt: Bolger Brick

Phil Bolger's BRICK sailboat (precursor to the PDRacer) uses a side mounted mast. There has been a lot of discussion on that, Bolger arguing that small asymmetries go unnoticed in sailing. Side mounted leeboards have the same kind of offset.

    Search a bit....
