Cool Fun, Infamy & Some Cash....York canoe race

Now whilst I'm obviously the hero of this account...……..I'll grudgingly admit there may have been a miniscule amount of input from other lesser known SOTPers

    Fun...…………………………...The whole day
My fourth visit to the event. A great friendly set of three races hosted by York paddlers led by Phil Puckrin.

On arrival I was met by Big Al and Roger Goodchild...…………………"guess who's here?" they said, it was Gary C

"Great" says I "another one I'll be behind"...………………….."that's what we've just said" chimes Al and off they shot for a warm up.
I went up to the bridge to spy on them and was shocked to find Big Al and Roger in a sleek looking Escapade …...Infamy …….a ringer!

Even worse when I realised it was a boat I used to own...…………@$*@

Anyway after a pre race briefing we all lined up for the challenge.

All too soon we were off

    [/IMG]

And that was the last I saw of Big Al and Roger until they passed me on the return leg...…………..I can't tell you what they shouted at me and Gary...………...but its not suitable for a family forum.

     Storming to the finish!

My race …………….well I started well until I heard a voice from behind me saying "your using twice as many paddle strokes as me for about the same speed" It was Gary C...…………...now despite this sledging I was able to keep up with him until about half way unfortunately my rapid paddling began to catch up with me and he went passed me...…………….."I can't let you beat me …..I'll never hear the last of it" he said...………...sigh...…..it's going to be a long year.
The next I heard from anyone else was not until the finish ……..when I was again mercilessly taunted as I heroically battled to a finish.

    by these two!!!!

    Ah …….well
It turns out he accomplice of this pair was none other than our own Dougoutcanoe……..and luckily he captured the shenanigans of the day on video, evidence I will be showing to the race committee

Well after a suitable recovery it was time for prize giving.
I was sponsoring the race this year so had to help with the presentations

and that is where the CASH bit of the blogg title fits in...……………...I bet Al a tenner I would finally get my hands on a trophy this year...……….before he knew I was the sponsor ………………...and I have photographic evidence to prove it...………….read the small print next time Al!

I really begrudged this pair their prize though...….they had to pry it out of my hands.

Although I should have given it to the real mastermind behind their victory

The SOTP results...….that I know of

    Medium race
1st place Big Al and Roger …...only 11 seconds off of the record
    1st Solo Gary C
    me...…….not last yay!

    Long race
    1st Solo David Perry
2nd Solo Vince McGowen…………..well done all

Excellent, well done to all who took part, turned up, didn't come last etc, etc.

Maybe next year, once I've worked out how to hide the Minn kota.

They say it’s the taking part that’s important. Of course “they” are losers. Winners know the truth

    Hi Bren,

I don't remember that party, it must have been a good one? Just one thing my head is rotated 180 degrees! Here's the true and correct video!

Sorry Bren but trying to show your true speed! The truth will tell.

I should point out that there was no skulduggery on our part. As previous winners of this race in a Wenonah prospector (not renowned for their speed), I happened to say at the "biggish meet" last year that I'd love to do the course in a fast canoe just to see how we'd do. Doug heard me and suggested we borrow his Wenonah Escapade, as it was somewhat faster. And that was it, we took him up on his offer. What I didn't realise at the time was that Doug had bought it from Bren because it was too fast for him to handle. Bren couldn't cope with the accolades of coming first in a race so got rid of the Escapade.

However Bren being the devious sort that he is, bet me that he would indeed get his hands on a trophy, not mentioning that he had sponsored the race. So I thought I'd out foxed him by encouraging GaryC to come along. Surely Gary would be faster than Bren, everyone is faster than Bren.

I was right, Gary was faster. I hadn't realised just how much faster. It was embarrassing. I think Gary had finished the race and was onto his second cigarette by the time Bren came into view.

Oh how I was going to slag Bren off.

Then he appeared behind the prize table with a smug grin on his face.

    What was this? Sponsor?

It was obvious that Mr Bren Cunning (yes Cunney is Irish for cunning apparently)
had tricked me to win the bet.

But there were no hard feelings as the money was going to a good cause.

Well done Bren, I think we are even now, eh?

You know what they say Doug.......if you can remember it you weren't really there. Regarding your head......not really an issue unless you start projectile vomiting .

Well that does cover quite a few boats.

It did indeed, and many thanks for your additional generosity

    Well done everyone!
