Default 1st Thursday of the month evening meet - Basingstoke Canal 5/7/18

So, its time to return to where it all started, nearly 10 years ago, when I attended my first SOTP meet.

Thursday 5th July, arrive for an approx 18.30 start. I may struggle with this timing slightly as I don't know exactly where I'll be that day, but hopefully OK, and will update.

Barley Mow Bridge, Winchfield Hurst. On Paddle Points: http://www.paddlepoints.net/PaddlePoints.php?PP=123

Paddle towards Odiham in the light, return in dusk/dark. Pub. Simples, as they say.

    So, who's about?

Me..some time after Mal's first trip, a Barley Mow evening trip (everything you shouldn't do....meeting people you didn't know, miles from anywhere and in the evening)was my first introduction to SOTP too

I'll try to remember to bring some more paddles for A&A to try, but they are all variants on the big shovel principle and mostly with T grips, but then I don't do indian,, rarely switch, and pry a lot.

Is there any possibility of turning into a night paddle? I would love to see Mary's badgers

Working until 5pm that day, so may struggle... I'll keep an eye on this one!

This might be tricky for me but I will make best effort.

I had occasion to pass the put-in yesterday so took a look. The Carpark has a sign that says "Gates Locked at 8:00pm"

    Does this happen ?

    Anyone have a key ?

Maj, its bound to turn into at least a dusk paddle, but there's little chance of seeing badgers with a group.

The car park gate is a new development! There has only ever been a height barrier. Worst case scenario we can ask to park in pub as we'll have a drink there afterwards. If I get a chance, I'll check it out, but not expecting to pass there before Thursday.

I might be able to fly past again, but this time I'll take a photo of the sign in case there's a contact number and have an ask in the pub if we could park.

    Standby, will advise

    Cheers Colin.

I may be able to divert on the way home from Southampton on Monday, if I get away reasonably early.

In the past, I've happily parked there until very late, and even overnight. I'm hoping this isn't going to be the end of that! Its also used as a pub overflow car park at times, I guess its not impossible its something to do with complaints about that. A couple of years ago, a rather odd chap moved into a dodgy van in the car park, and abused passers by. It could simply be that the wheels of bureaucracy have finally turned to try and stop similar happening. Which it won't do, it'll just stop folk enjoying the peace of a summer evening.

I'm sure the pub will be happy to be a plan B.

Plan C will be to start from the opposite end at Colt Hill Wharf, and park on the lane alongside the bridge there.

    OK, the Roll Call

I had to do a little job in Yateley this afternoon so came home a round about way.

    The sign states
    March to September 8am - 8pm
    Oct to Feb 8am - 6pm

Do you think there's any chance of the Canal Authority trusting us with a key ???

I had a word with the Landlord of the Pub and he said it would be fine for us to use his car park :-)
(assuming of course that we use the pub on our return)

Thanks mate. I'm pretty sure there's no chance we'll be done by 8pm, so after unloading the canoes at the canal, suggest we then move cars to the pub and pop in briefly to say hi and thanks.

I'll be coming from Reigate, via Woking to change cars! (new temporary company car doesn't yet have rack) I fully expect to be on time, but if the traffic goes wobbly, I'll message somebody.

Managed to put a Stanley-Knife through my finger today, it's been steri-stripped and has a cartoon-style big dressing on it. I can't bend it and shouldn't get it wet so paddling is a no-go for me for a week or so.

    Have fun all

My paddling is handicapped enough without trying it with a mitten and an ouchie :-)
