Default 1st Thursday of the month photo dump

If you were looking on the 'meetings' page of this esteemed forum at the beginning of May, you will have notice that Mal suggested a paddle on the 1st Thursday of each month. For the first of these meets, I think, about ten of us turned up at Shalford Bridge for the Shalford to Guildford loop via the Navigation and River. There seems little point blogging the trip in the traditional Sotp way as this classic has featured many times on this forum. Suffice to say it involved easy paddling on the Wey Navigation, a bit of tree dodging on the River Wey after a short portage, followed by a stop on the meadows opposite St Catherine's Hill and then the return back, in the ever growing dusk, to the Parrot Inn near Shalford Bridge.
Do check out Mal's map below for route details.

So this a page for those who paddled on that, and possibly future Thursday nights, to show their photos, as many were taken, anyway here are mine.

It was one grey/green dusky evening

The first tree on the river section was tacked without much problem.

This is James and it was his first trip out with SoTP, maybe his first trip in a canoe, courteously tandem-ed by aannnddyy.

The second tree was quiet low as the water level had risen due to rain, so some went over...

    paddle-29 by yellowdoorphoto, on Flickr
Some just laid back (and thought of...?)

    paddle-31 by yellowdoorphoto, on Flickr
and some did the snooker pose

    paddle-38 by yellowdoorphoto, on Flickr
This is the nicest man on Sotp...Maj is walking so James can have his first solo paddle.

After our stop in the meadows the return journey got a bit too dark for photos and anyway the pub was calling!

I'm not sure how to embed this nicely, but here's an animation of the GPS track:

Great idea Andy, saves me writing (another) blog!

One thing to note. Most people seem to have been called Andy.

Here are a few of mine:

    The flotilla/fleet/Armada gathers

Terry, talking and gesticulating and paddling. Special skills.

    Colin

    Pete and Julian

    Most of the crew

James, first timer & relative of SOTP's Scottish contingent's Andy and Tracy, kindly offered a space by Andy. That's a confusing sentence.

    Off we go

    Andy-with-the-wrong-hat-on (FlatCapAndy)

    Andy. Another one (Barzi)

RiffRaff weir was as pushy, boily, weird, and nasty as I've ever seen it, so we kept clear.

Heading down the backwater around St Catherine's lock, one of my favourites. Just a mile from Guildford Town centre.

    First tree dodging.

    Second tree dodging

    Pensive Andy

    Third tree dodging

Andy worried he won't escape the constant banter behind.

Fourth, and most fun, tree dodging.

    Can you identify these legs?

    Escape from the jungle

After leaving the backwater, and with the light starting to fail already, we headed down to the meadows for a break. For some reason, I was the only one who brought stove and burgers. So everybody else had to wait for me to eat, starving and dribbling slightly. (them, not me!)

James tried a bit of solo paddling for pretty much the first time.

By the time we started back, it was dusk. Paddling back slowly with James, learning his J-stroke, we were treated to a lovely quiet paddle. Just before lock, dozens of bats, big 'uns, were flying around us, just wonderful.

The return from the lock was quick and easy, and then after much faffing, half the party retired to the pub, whilst the rest made the mistake of going home early.

He's now a seasoned solo paddler. Well for about 45 mins. None of this sea kayaking malarkey now

    Default June's evening paddle

So here a few of my photos from the 2nd in our series of Thursday evening meets.
Again we started at Shalford Bridge but this time headed towards Godalming on the Wey Navigation with the intention of looping back to Shalford on the River Wey

    Peter joined the search.

first thursday-18 by yellowdoorphoto, on Flickr
Once the portage was found I managed to drag my canoe through the digestive end product of this beast on my way to the access point of the river..uggg!

There were enough blockages on the River to make it interesting, here Maj and Peter do gardening.

Despite the odd blood sucking insect it was a truly beautiful and still evening, with so many different shades of green. It was the perfect way to end a slightly stressful day at work.

    Andy,

Nice photos; I did take some but not sure any are worth publishing. I'll have a look

    Mal,

I might be up for a paddle on Thursday. If you can cope with the company, give me a shout.

I'll probably nip out early evening, but it won't be for long. About 4.45-5, Mytchett Canal visitor centre.

OK, half way through the month and I've finally sorted some photos from the July evening paddle. Two weeks to the next!

Wey and Arun Canal, Loxwood, Thurs 2nd August

A few of us made it last Thursday, a quiet and peaceful evening, warm and so relaxing. Apart from the fact that the canal has been partially drained between the first and second lock east of the pub, and again after the aqueduct! The bit WITH water was a relief, for about two minutes before we met the weed....

    Here are a few shots.

    Mark & Karen

    Fighting through the weed

Open water at last, in wonderful evening sunshine.

Here we had a bite to eat before heading home in the dusk.

    Caption competition?

The paddling might have been short, but it was a stunning summer evening, how could it not be wonderful? And there might have been a pint at the end...

    See you in September!
