Default 1st Thursday of the month evening meet - River Wey 3/5/18

So, we used to meet up quite regularly in my part of the world, but seem to have drifted out of the habit. I thought it might be nice to have a regular* meet, and attempt to keep it so for at least the summer.

Perhaps other parts of the country might like to do the same, and we can have a few meets going on at the same time!

Obviously, all evening meets should finish within range of a pub, or should stop on the way for a brew/beer. All welcome, doesn't matter what standard, or what canoe.

(*Regular might be 1st Thurs of the month for a while, but I reserve the right to change the day if I, or a majority, prefer other days. Or if it looks a bit drizzly. Or if the beer's off at the pub.)

To kick off. Rick (regular to many of Elveys paddles/trips) works in Guildford now, so contacted me about an after work paddle. We've agreed on:

Thursday 3rd May. 6.30 start, so aiming at a little earlier.

Broadford Br (Shalford Br), south of Guildford
. Here, on Paddle Points: http://www.paddlepoints.net/PaddlePoints.php?PP=99

Parrot Inn just over the bridge for afters.

    All welcome!

Anything happening on the 2nd of May?

    Mal,
I'm available that day for any 'Paddle-Pathfinding' duties, along with any downstream shrub & weed clearance that may be required....and of course, any pre-planned fire-log drop offs...as my boat doesen't paddle too well unless it's very heavily laden, as you've probably noticed over the years!

Can't make the Thursday, but happy to contribute in the meantime.....
Keep yer paddles wet, and powder dry....

    Hi Mal

Thanks for the welcome to the forum and for the invitation to meet up this coming Thursday.

Will be there for about 18.15 and will be conspicuous in my white Defender 110 with no canoe on the roof. If I can blag a seat with someone that would be great, otherwise I look forward to having a pint with y'all after.

    Regards

    James

Mal, this might just be what I need to make me "get my finger out".

My new(old) boat has sat, unused in the garden so long that my Daughter said I should turn it over, plant things around it and call it a pond.

my apologies...off to France to paddle with Elveys' paddle buddies. Hope to make the next one.

just bought a genuine, exceedingly old and battered tandem boat, Disco 164, so in future might be able to provide the odd spare seat, but not this time.

I'll have a spare seat if need be. I haven't done much tandem paddling though, so it might be a bit of an adventure!

That's very kind of you. Thank you. Do I need to get a life jacket?

I will need to get one in due course anyway so can nip down to Whitewater Shepperton if needs be.

    Thanks again.

I've nearly always got two in the car, and looks like I'll be there. You can have a choice of seats or swap about James!

Folks, if we go down the St Catherine's backwater, there are some trees down. All passable with a little entertainment...

Mal, yes, i was wondering if they might have cleared the fallen tree up by now. Shall i bring some saws? I could go there a bit early and do some gardening...

How many people are going now? I think there were a few on facebook too

All trees are still there, depends on levels as to whether they're dead easy, a shuffle, or a duck.

Always have a little saw with me anyway. Probably won't need it to get through, but might be able to do a little trimming. Not sure how many are going as I don't know how many you're bringing!

Sorry mate, didn't see this post. I'm still away, so won't be around tomorrow. No serious jungle bashing required, but feel free to leave hidden caches of beer every 100m or so...

Would folk prefer to have a stop, brew/beer/burger, rather than the pub after, if its a nice evening? Of course, its not impossible to do both...

Watching the level a little, just rising upstream from the earlier rain. Think it will "pulse" through by tomorrow night.

In think I might grab a sandwich or something unless you have already decided on a pub?

Just to say thanks to everyone for the very warm welcome I received last night.

Look forward to meeting you all again, just got to find a boat that can go in a straight line. I'm sure its not me....

thanks to Mal for organizing last night's trip. good to meet everyone, although I'm not sure I matched all the forum names to real-life people. thanks to James for bow-paddling duties

They all CAN go in a straight line, just that most need a little more effort / practice than you'd first think, to do so.

The most surprising boat I've paddled so far (and that's not many) is Andy's little Cedar & Canvas. It's about as wide as it is long, but by some cunning or accidental hull design is easy to make go straight, seems to toddle along pretty fast but will turn like a coracle.
It's a physics (or maybe fluid dynamics) defying little craft.

James, i think you were trying to catch the lead canoes which may have caused you to zigzag. You need to just slow down and take your time, the rest will come. you did really well btw.

    seen you soon

OK, so the second one needs sorting. And just as we're getting into the habit, I'll be away. I'm going to put a suggestion up, then leave you to it!
