Default River Wey Christmas Paddle 17th December

*****CHANGE OF PLAN, NOW ON SUNDAY 17TH DECEMBER*****

Its that time of year again.

I was proposing a paddle on Sat 16th, it HAS moved to 17th as more available. Let's say 10.30 ish.

Like last year, suggesting a modest paddle from the bridge at Shalford on the Wey. Probably towards Guildford using the St Catherine's Backwater, down to Guildford, and back through the lock.

    http://www.paddlepoints.net?R=36&A=1462

A key part of the fun will be a hour or so on the meadows just above Guildford for a festive feed up and a few drinks. Fireboxes and kelly kettles positively encouraged.

Fancy hats/dress and decorated canoe optional!

    Absolutely anybody welcome. Even you.

    Downcreek Paddle Demos

I will also bring along some demo Downcreek Paddles that I am currently custodian of, should anybody wish to try them.

These (Dipper, Swan, Heron, Kingfisher, 2 Lapwings) plus a Big Dipper

My Bike Club's Christmas do is Friday 15th so it could be either

"Just the thing to blow out the cobwebs"

    or

"I'm in no fit state to sit in a chair, let alone drive a car and paddle a canoe".

Perhaps if I put myself down as a maybe, get my gear all prepped and loaded the day before and just see how we go.

I'm considering switching this to the Sunday, as 3 people have specifically said that's better for them. I'll decide tonight.

Hoping we get better weather next Sunday than this!

As it happens, Fran is paddling the same area, in the other direction, with the Canoe Camping Club so we may well end up sharing a lunch spot with them (again!).

We'll chuck a few tarps and stuff in so we can get some shelter.

Canoe is now loaded on the van so no excuse to drive 5 minutes for this meet

Mal, I would like to try one the demo paddles if an otter tail style is available.

No problem, have play with any of them. Either the Heron or the Lapwing would be ottertail-like.

I ended up having to work today; after a very late night and only three hours kip. A real struggle to be honest. Caught my second wind this evening though and have just loaded up my little boat. See you in the morning.

Hmm, I bet that hurt after last nights celebrations!

I'm just knackered after "bikepacking" 50 miles through mud over the South Downs, with a bivi under the tarp last night on the tops. So I will NOT be rushing about tomorrow....

    PM received and replied.

Thanks to all who braved the early cold, and later rain, for a nice social amble along the river. And some burning stuff, of course.

Peter, hope you're feeling better soon, you sounded rubbish!

    Thanks for the invitation Mal.

Good to meet some new faces and many thanks to ? and ? for letting me have a play in your boats (sorry I can't bloody remember your names). It was a total shock to realise that there are canoes that you can stand up and walk around in, are about the size of my van, but weigh as much as my underpants.

    Some pictures

Mal, Thanks for organising, great to see everyone.

Peter, hope you are feeling better.

Stew, well chuffed with my new the fire lighting skills - those seeds from that pod do get everywhere! For the amount of wood i burnt, i did not get much cooking time.

Col, thanks for the pics. So, a new canoe may be on the horizon...

An enjoyable day. Felt far better than I sounded, but once the rain set in I felt a quick exit was the best . I did have a brief exchange with Fran, lunching at the lock, and got home ok. Thanks to all for a great day out, with a bit of gardening thrown in.

Most of my kit is dry again.
