    A bargain.

Mind, if that's semi dress I wonder what full dress is like?

It's a steady job but he wants to be a paperback writer

Would be a bargain if real leather - looks like faux
Perhaps not semi-dress - closest I could find to Bonar's specification

    Ken,
You nailed it there Amigo, as that was just the one that I was looking at. But, I'm once again somewhat reluctant to 'buy online' - (Hey! - I'm old school!) as I very much want to see it, touch it, and possibly smell it beforehand....before parting with any of my hard-earned cash!

I can live with Faux leather at £22 a pop.. esp. if it looks the bizz., and thereafter with faux fur.... for full effect!

I'm just a little concerned now as to what might be 'the full effect'....that's all!

If all else now fails, copy, paste and print this image above and use it wisely above your fireplaces....if you indeed value your offspring!

Trying hard now to behave....but it is difficult, as per usual!

I have a cunning plan that requires me to travel up on Friday and camp overnight before the official rendezvous.
Do the locals know if I would be ok to hammock/camp at Islip Dave mooring on Friday night and if so, do I have to ask permission /book.
    Thanks.

    Hi Martin,

I believe Friday is the 26th, which happens to be Australia Day. I think myself and Kenny could be tempted to join you if I can sort the time-off/logistics. I believe that once you have joined the friends of the river nene you don't need to book, but I'm sure someone who knows what they are talking about will be able to confirm or deny this outrageous statement.

As a member of Fotrn you can camp at Islip Dave on Friday night.....although there’s a tree on the mooring I have looked at it with Hippo and have yet to work out how to hammock from it.

The Woodford mooring has a nice stand of trees and leaves a decent half day paddle to Peartree Island.....it is also a ten minute walk from a pub.

No extra permission or booking required.

Loved that shot Ewan, just perfect fae a Burns' Night paddle do... hell yeah!

In previous years we've experienced a few other 'Tartan flashes' along the... WHA! HAE

With the Loggers once again leading the way....wa ' hey, wa' hey!

    My only wish last year...

Was that I had brought two swords along... and maybe, hired a piper!

Working hard now on a Burn's Night Menu for up to 20, to complement the location that Dick has so kindly arranged for us all....but. I just keep on plateau'ing out on 16.... Grrrr!!
WORK THEREFORE IN PROGESS - SO STAY TUNED!

    Martin & Robin,
I would very much like to join you and others at the Woodford Moorings... 'The Night Before the Burns' for Australia Day...mate! But, unfortunately I need to be at Pear Tree Island on Sat.. 27th by noon latest...as there'll be 4kgs a' Haggis tae cook up! (and other stuff! )

Personally now planning on leaving the put-in at Thrapston at 1000hrs on Sat..27th January , after a rather decent bacon butty ( or three ) at the Bread Basket Café in town ....

    Some rather good cake!

    Ummm...cake!

Not too sure now whether I'll be home in time for this side of Christmas or the other....but whatever, whilst I have the chance now .....and a truck full of Turkeys.....

I'm wishing you, one and all, a Very Merry Christmas and Happy-Paddling New Year!

Whoever filmed this, though I do have a feeling that it may have been part of the military contingent that day, absolutely nailed it! - Especially the slow pause pan by left to right at 14:28 in the You Tube clip.....Absolutely Brilliant!

    The 'Prestige Scotland' shop.....Love it!

We have similar outlets such as this down here, south of the border, which we know as ... Poundland!

Looking forward now to a retail line maybe popping up in the near future under the name of 'Prestige Poundland!' or just 'Uttertat Unlimited'.......I digress somewhat......sorry!

Hurrah, I have a pass this year. (Mrs BB called it that so I am fine to use it).

It's been many years since I joined a Burns Night paddle, i think the last one I did was on the Thames. Does that mean I have now dropped onto the 'Untraditional Attendees' list? I have added myself there.

    Unfortunately,...

After what now appears to be a rather under-budgeted and rather overspent Christmas, where the four consecutive days that I did manage to get off, through sheer luck alone, just weren't enough amidst the usual madness of being on the roads over the holiday period, and trying to get into small and large towns alike with a full compliment of Turkeys and all the usual trimmings... the effort has taken it's toll!

Add to that now over the last 9 days or so, I've been fighting tooth and nail with a most vicious flu virus......the worst I've ever had! (We meet at dawn each day to do combat, and by Sunset we're more or less even Stevens.. with neither willing to yield yet!)....

    So, unfortunately...
I should be signing off here and offering up the appropriate excuses to bow out of this one.......but,, I'm not!

I've just today ordered my Sporran!

So, it's still very much a case of.... Game On Mc Dude!

    MB

    p.s.
Anyone heard from the loggers yet?
    p.p.s
Still not sure if i can cover for a full 20 Haggis, Neaps and Tatties... probably more like 10-15 max.. due to max.. size of Dutch Oven and present finances available. Must add here that it will cost me between £6-£7 per head. So, if you're happy to take a chance ... be prepared to drop some coinage into the rusty tin that will be provided! (and be prepared to take it straight back out again if the food isn't up to the mark!) - Can't get fairer that that can you?

    Hi Mark,
I'm also willing to cough up in advance if you PM me your bank details ( trust me, I'm not a Nigerian prince).
Also willing to lend a hand if there's anything needs doing.
I've found a recipe for traditional biscuits involving oats and whisky. What could be more Scottish than that? Deep fried with a glass of Irn Bru?

Is anyone arranging for the rain to stop to let river levels drop? Pictures on the FOTRN Facebook page look a little challenging recently..

Glad to hear that the flu hasn't got the better of you, Mark. Like others, I'm happy to advance payment if that will help ease cashflow. And also happy to be volunteered for extra duties if there's anything required. Currently I'm working on the basis that I'll bring some booze to fuel the chef and some fuel to help warm the communal fire.

Really looking forward to getting out again. (Will keep my fingers crossed for some dry weather to let river levels fall a little.)
    All the best,

Hmm... you didn't say who would like to do such and such - you appointed the people e.g. Robin make cullen skink, Fran make Franchan, Crow - give an address and say grace. So what choice did the rest of us have to get involved?

I am determined to be there, but dessert may be a trifle late. I'm afraid I will be in Plymouth (Torpoint to be precise) until 4:30 pm!! Google maps gives me a 4½
hour drive to Thorpe Bridge, so I'm intending to put in there and join you for a late puddin' . If the roads are clear I may be on the water by 9:30 pm, and it's then only ½ mile paddle to the mooring.

Just in case new participants in this shindig would like to know where to go and where they're going..........

Start here https://goo.gl/maps/dF8CTuUeAiB2 by Nine Arches Bridge in Thrapston/Islip (they argue about that) - if you spin the Street View image around you can see where to leave cars on the road by the side of the pub - there is probably only room to offload a couple of cars at a time here.

Shuttle vehicles can be left here https://goo.gl/maps/RCmLVf1V43G2 at Upper Barnwell lock where there is plenty of off road parking.

If anybody needs alternative launch/finish spots please PM me.........cheers, Dick

I've had a word and Strong Stream Advice was cancelled today..........it would have to get a foot higher than the photos I put on FOTRN for us to have any difficulties on the stretch between Thrapston and Oundle.

I have alternative access and egress points in mind if we do get biblical floods - fear ye not Braveheart!

Trifle, cranachan - what's the difference?

(apart from whiskey, oats, honey, cream, more cream, and some cream ).

Thinking if I bring the more barge-like Pelican, I'll have extra space for one or more of a) a brace of highland cattle, b) The Room With A View, c) a full-size drum kit, d) breakfast kitchen, for the production of sausage cobs and/or bacon butties on Sun morning - think we have Sat night pretty well-covered :-) (thanks all)

Probably b) and/or d) - separated on the ground a good few feet!

I'm at Barrow this w/e, but if I've time I'll play with some in-boat loading layouts and see what fits, but in principle would anyone be wanting to partake of Cob/Bap offer on Sun (prob only worth doing if 6 or more peeps would be availing themselves thereof)?.

Looking to be a short-weekender (Sat-Sun) for me.

All very much tempting ain't it!

Will post tomorrow now with all the coordinating instructions and the general outline plan....knowing now that half of you out there will want to paddle up hill, whatever the plan!

A very quick one right now..

    Jon, Martin,
If you really want to help, bring along some decent potato mashers..as .there'll be 4kgs of Spuds and 2kgs of Swedes to mash... once we've pealed them all!

Not too sure now where I'm going to put that additional 4kgs of Spuds, and the 2kgs of Swedes.... and whether or not my boat may then float then afterwards....

Nothing ventured, nothing gained eh! ( whilst dreading now any portages! )

    Let's just do it!

And on another cryptic note now : If you find that you have space in your boat, then fill it with firewood!

Ah, I see from the picture that you've obviously packed stones to build your Scottish Baronial Castle.

Mate, I'm arriving on the Friday, as I think you originally planned, so if you need a little extra space and some Portage Power, lets make sure we time it together.

Loads of room in there Mark
If everyone's going there on Friday I might have to join the masses.

    Hi Stewart,

Friends of the River Nene stipulated that the maximum number of people allowed was 20....that’s probably all there’s room for and as a wild site with no facilities they didn’t want it overloaded....provided the list hasn’t reached 20 by the time I stop typing you are most welcome.

So we could do with some clarification on the reserved and maybe attendees.

Also, it’s a requirement of their insurers and agreements with landowners that all should be members of FOTRN....it’s only a tenner and you can download a form on their website.

FOTRN are looking to me unfortunately to make sure the conditions are complied with and to ensure we can continue to use their moorings out of boating season for big meets.

    Executive Decision!

No more attendees can be accepted as we now appear to be on the maximum allowed of 20.

Once the 'reserved' and 'maybe' are resolved it may be possible to add some more.

Please don’t take a chance and turn up as it will put me in a difficult position at the next meeting of FOTRN and jeopardise future use of this wonderful location.

I've nudged the Loggers to see if they're coming. Or have even noticed they've been added to the list and their photos used for promotional purposes

Don't leave joining FOTRN too late, as it might take them a little while to process you. Mine was about a week I reckon. You get a card and a sticker. I'm carrying the card, but haven't applied the sticker.

    Here's a version of the list for arrival time to be added - have done so where its been mentioned;

    Patterdale Paddler (avail Fri)
    Bisbrooke Hippo
    Broadsman (Sat)
    kmac
    idc
hemlock (Fri, talk of camping elsewhere)
    Neil.
Mal (Friday, arriving in plenty of time to help portage the Bismark and get set up by dark)
    Bobbing Ben
    Cankay (Sat)
    Fran (late Sat)
    Sirus (Sat but wavering)
    Lee
RESERVED for Logger 158 until further notificatiion
RESERVED for Logger 159 - DITTO - (Plus The Black Hound! )
    Bonarmbj (Friday)
    jimmyads (maybe)

    Untraditional Attendees

    Crow
    Bootstrap Bob
Darryl (Sat, by association with Broadsman and Kenny the Kangaroo)
    Stewart (Fri)

I met with the head of the EA's Waterways Team on Friday and she assured me Titchmarsh Lock would be open in time for our meet - for those unfamiliar with the Nene, Titchmarsh is a beast of a portage and is immediately upstream of the camp venue - however, the maintenance teams are working their way downstream so we will either have Wadenhoe or Lilford locks to portage - both easy drags into backwaters and minus the weight of food and booze......Dick

Request now for a further 48hrs stay of execution prior to posting the General Outline Plan for the upcoming week-end....
I have one or two more last T's to cross and several more I's to also dot! - Pls. bear with me!

In the mean time now, just think about Saturday nights menu....

Whisky Cocktail (or very much applicable non-alcoholic soft drink ) with Smoked Salmon Canapes....

Mug of Cullen Skink for 6, with a Mug of Scotch Broth for the rest of the Clan!

Traditionally cooked Haggis (which will take some 4hrs ) served then with Neaps and Tatties and a choice of either Whisky Sauce or Gravy (On the improvised table by 8pm)

Followed then by some specially paddled-in Franachan!.....

(Probably best now if we take a few deep pauses in between courses, just to come up for air! )

Because it's Cheese & Biscuits next!

Hoping now to 'firm up on numbers regarding the catering, as some have so far expressed a view to self catering (SC). I will need to confirm numbers wishing to take a chance with my proposed burnt offerings by Tues 23rd January latest, As I'll be then be using the Wednesday to procure and buy-in the foodstuffs in advance.

    Imitating the process..

    Patterdale Paddler (avail Fri) (SC)
    Bisbrooke Hippo (SC)
Broadsman (Sat) Providing the Cullen Skink and willing to take a chance with my burnt offerings!
    kmac
idc (Forget the coinage system.... I'm happy to accept bottled beer up to the equivalent value! )
hemlock (Fri, talk of camping elsewhere)

Thanks for the reminder Mal, I have just filled mine out and paid.

What time are peeps intending to meet up on Friday and where? I'm not sure whether I can make Friday yet but it would be good to have the info just in case.

    Evenin' all.

A few additional points after a conversation with Mr BMBJ

Wood. We can't have too much wood. Preferably good wood! The hours of darkness are looooong.

Water. We can't have too much water. Preferably good water!
There is, I think, a tap at Wadinghoe lock, and near the start at Thrapston. I will possibly do a water run down to Wadinghoe or up to Thrapston on the Saturday to top up what we use Friday night.

FOTRN Membership. Mark spoke to them and paid for his own membership over the phone. IF there are people who leave it until last minute, this is possible by phone, but they're not used to it and wouldn't want numerous phone calls. So if anybody hasn't paid up yet, do it on the website soon, but IF there are any last minute needs it would be good to try and co-ordinate them so that all could be done in one phone call. Get it ordered this week through the website and you should be fine.

    Friday arrivals

Mark and I will be meeting Friday morning with a view to setting off before lunch. We will have a lock key with us, though note previous info that some locks may be closed for work.

    Saturday

Mark spoke to Jon (Cankay) and he also has a lock key for Saturday departures. I'll let him suggest timing.

Having now managed to speak with the Clan Chief through intermittent connections, as he made his way through the Snow somewhere in the Peak District...and other conversations today with various other Chieftains sheltering now in the low lands.... I believe now that we have a plan for the gathering clan, and that it's very Bonnie!

A bit too late for me now to post the full details..... (As I've just got back from collecting several tonnes of exotic seafood imported from Norway, Sweden, the Maldives, Thailand, Vietnam and China.....from a tiny little depot in.....are you ready for this?.......Warminster! - My mind therefore is still very much boggling tonight! )

    Full details to follow ASAP

    Brother Crow...
Sorry to hear that you can't make it this time, a real shame. But, what better excuse now for a return visit to the Nene in the spring eh!

So, with nine million bicycles in Beijing, or so that I've heard - you decide to choose a cycling holiday in Vietmam, starting off in Bangkok peddling through Thailand and Cambodia en route.....

Best excuse I've ever heard for dodging a Burns Night Paddle gathering....and very much acceptable!
