    Cool 6th Annual Xmas Idle

The clocks haven't gone back yet, however the first leaf has fallen from the trees ........so must be time for Christmas

The Idle Beggars cordially invite you to join us for another Idle Christmas
This years trip will be on Saturday 16th December
It will be over the favoured route starting at Old London Rd West Drayton and Ending at Chainbridge lane. A comfortable 10 ish miles downhill.
Under normal conditions this is an easy river for anyone comfortable in moving water.
Please note there are 3 tiny weirs to negotiate and a slightly larger one at Hallcroft which can be portaged if you don't like the look of it.
water levels will be monitored and we will move the put in to Retford if too high. We will aim for an early start time and hopefully on the water for about 9 to complete before it gets dark.

This trip comes with bacon butties fitted as standard, a veggie option will be provided, but let me know
Please be on the lookout for the bl*@dy penguin ......he sneaked by security last time.
Camping may be available approx. a mile from the put in............this was generously made available last year by one of the Beggars, hopefully I will be able to confirm one way or the other in the near future.

This post code will take you to Old London Rd DN22 8ED ........about 1/2 mile from the put in.

I look forward to seeing you all

Is the trip only open to canoes? Wouldn't mind joining you but I'm between canoes atm and only have a kayak.

    Oh yeah, Oh yeah

    Well I suppose it beats Capt'n Sh..head.

Guess this means I'm gonna need to bung the Barrow race organisers a tenner to get my time reduced by 10mins, and then, come November, we'll see who the Capt'n Slow is!

I am considering getting up very early and joining you. Is 9.0@clock start when you hope to start, or start the shuttle or start to think about starting in true SOTP manner? It seems more fun and a better return on investment than the Race, a trifle further south, but much shorter.

Hoping to be afloat around that time Peter.........if you're struggling to get there don't worry about the shuttle one of us will get you and you're boat back to the start.

Sorry folks, it looks like I'll be unable to paddle, I'm severely restricted by a bad hernia, I'd have to keep stopping every mile to try to get my guts back to where they should be. I'll have to join falcn on the injured list, but hope to coincide with you somewhere along the route.
Is anybody camping overnight? I could bring my Xmas pudding along for the traditional fry-up!!

Sorry to hear it Eddie , hope everything gets popped back where it should be! I think you've just frightened off the potential campers! I don't know of anyone camping at the moment.

Welcome Impcanoe, Warthog & Tracy and Jonah! looking like a jolly turnout.
I will be keeping an eye on the river levels, however this river can take a lot of water without the hazard level increasing drastically. Even with the predicted forecast we should be ok, worst case scenario we move the start to Retford...........providing driving conditions are ok
    I'll update closer the day

I wasn't planning on camping, hoping to do the cross Pennine journey in time for the start, so fingers crossed all this weird white stuff disappears before next weekend.

Had planned to do Friday and Saturday nights.... assuming I'm not the only one!

Would you like any provisions bringing for the fry-fest Bren?

I know it's a rat, not a hamster, but it's the closest I could get!

On the camping front... Is the same place as usual?

I'll be bringing enough supplies to produce about 30 bacon butties but help with the cooking would be welcome Peter

River levels are holding steady at the moment but will rise with tonights rain and meltwater, however with three dry days before the event fairly confidant that the normal route will be fine. Watch this space! for updates.

Nope: Do you remember Jax, who came along with Di and her caravan. She lives about 1/4 mile from the put in, I understand you could camp in a small paddock next to her house , or in a field by the river. The choice depends on numbers or the weather, but I think she will liaise with Bren about it.

No problem Bren, sounds great. Have you enough cooking gear or do you need me to bring my little Jetboil stove and frying pan?

Because there are a lot of people coming along who came to the Guide Dog Paddle That Wasn't a few months ago, can I just give them a bit of news.

You will remember Netty, the lovely blind lady who came along with her amazing Guide Dog Zola. Many people were generous in donating to her collecting fund, where she was raising 1500 to name a guide dog puppy after her father and Father in law. Their names were Ken and Tom. She would certainly like to thank everybody and let you know that she has passed the 2500 target and she is awaiting the birth of Keto. Thanks to all.

Did you know that the River Idle has it's own god, who defends the river and wreaks havoc whenever it realises that it will be assaulted by strange people in weird boats. Last time, it wreaked vengeance on Jewels, this time it has chosen one of your hostesses for the camping.
Jax has gone base over apex and broken her arm, and is due for surgery tomorrow (Friday).
So I've elected myself main contact for camping.

You will be camping in the paddock next to the house of Di and herself, which is probably a bit drier than the alternative, and more sheltered.

This arvo, I'll put up a map and directions, plus add up how many will be camping. So if you have any queries on the camping side of the event, just ask on here.

At the moment it looks like 2 or 3 will be camping, but if anyone else wants to join them, just come along.

To get to the camping spot, if you drive past the put-in until you reach the first crossroads, turn left down Church Lane (which is a dead end) Harbet Mill is a couple of hundred yards down there on the right. The paddock for you to use is on the left.

The Idle makes me nervous... it does now have a bit of a reputation!

    Thanks for the directions! :-)

Chris, my wife, is making us home made mince pies. Sorry but gluten free isn't an option due to lack of available local pastry supplies. Can do lower fat (zero fat mincemeat) and/or full fat pies. All are vegetarian compatible (due to daughter's allergies).
Anyone for lower fat mince pies?

I've been reassured by Faln and Mayobren that I have nothing to worry about, and may actually not wear my drysuit.
