Default Welsh Government Consultation on Access to the Outdoors

Welsh Government is currently consulting on 'Taking Forward Wales’ Sustainable Management ofNatural Resources'. Chapter 4 'Access to the Outdoors' is of particular interest to paddlers and other outdoor enthusiasts. The deadline for responses is 30 September!

It is vital that Welsh Government have a mandate to take forward changes that can make a real difference.

Waters of Wales - WoW have prepared an Online Response Form for use by those who agree with our response to the consultation. Alternatively, anyone is welcome to use any part of our response to inform their own response letter.

The full consultation document can be accessed via the link below:

Welsh Government Consultation on Proposed New Access Legislation
The Welsh Government are currently proposing legislation which we think will, to a very large extent, give statutory effect to the Common Law rights that we believe already exist. Such a statute would provide a major step forward in our quest for recognition of widespread public rights to use our rivers for recreation. Those that oppose widening public recreational use have in the past demonstrated their ability to mobilise their supporters but their weakness is that their argument is for a continuance of their interpretation of a status quo which the Welsh Government has already identified has failed to achieve its’ objective of extending public access to the countryside including rivers.
The Welsh Government has asked the public to respond to their proposals. This issue will not simply be determined on the basis of weight of numbers but it is important that we demonstrate a credible volume response.
River Access For All has submitted our response to the consultation and we would urge you to do the same. You can do this by either writing your own response (feel free to use ours as a template) or by simply emailing Welsh Government endorsing our response. A template has been provided for this purpose. Either use the online response form or simply cut and paste the content into an email to naturalresourcemanagement@wales.gsi.gov.uk.
The deadline for responding to the Welsh Government proposal is 30th September. Welsh Government will not know what you think unless you tell them.

Thanks to everyone that responded to Canoe Wales & British Canoeing's recent consultation regarding our response to the Welsh Government. We had over 1000 people feedback, with the vast majority supporting not only our suggested response, but also helping us give the Welsh Government a very clear view of the strength of feeling amongst paddlers.

We have published a draft of our full response, which incorporates the feedback we received. You can find it at this link - https://www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/n...cess-in-wales/. It will remain draft until we submit to the Welsh Government on the deadline day.

    Don't stop getting involved now!

The Welsh Government will be receiving strong and positive responses from CW & BC, and also from Waters of Wales and RAFA. But it will also be hugely influential if as many paddlers also respond as possible. WOW and RAFA have provided links to their suggested response - and you can find a quick and easy form to help send a response direct to Welsh Government as possible. Our response form sends a reply direct to them, and we know many paddlers already have! But the more the merrier! Again, access the form via this link - https://www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/n...cess-in-wales/

There is a complication. It seems that the consultation was originally intended to end earlier (now) and whilst the consultation was extended to 30th September the Welsh Government online response document was not and using this method results in a message saying the consultation has ended. I have contacted Welsh Government asking them to reopen the online response form but in the meantime the Consultation document confirms that you have until 30th September to submit your response and emailing it to naturalresourcemanagement@wales.gsi.gov.uk will work.

I've had confirmation from the Welsh Government that the problem with their online response form has now been rectified and this is now fully operational again.

Last few days! Over 700 responses now, just on the BC/CW response alone - so massive thanks to everyone. But very much the more the merrier! Response templates also available from RAFA and Waters of Wales, details of both in the thread - or you can send one completely your own!
