Default Marauders meetbrecon & monmouth canal 8-10 sep

Time for a Maraud says Uncle Albert. Woodworm, Two Sugars, Freeway and Stewart and I have tried this site and paddles on the canal a couple of times, The site has a field near the canal and the owner are willing to let us have exclusive use of it for 7 a night, downside there is no water, electricity or loo up there, but a couple of hundred metres down the track are the usual camp site loos, showers, running water and electric hook up on the main site, which can be booked separately direct to the site. For those wanting to be next the water in the top field I can organise a toilet tent and chemical loo (liquid only!!! ) for those in need. The top field will take tents, sleep pods, small caravans and transit size and below camper vans.

It is a great location just five minutes walk from Crickhowell, there is a pub by the camp site and it was being reopened and done up last time we were there

    http://www.parkfarm-campsite.co.uk

Possible paddles include obviously the canal and a nice big lake at Llangorse with a five squid fee to paddle for the day.

It is also on facebook but would like a list of names on here please

I'm in. Always wanted to paddle the canal here, having done the Usk on numerous occasions. Venue sounds excellent, thanks Uncle Albert!

Paddling some or all of this little gem was to have been my Spring / Summer project.

Something about an election got in the way :-( :-(

Sorry not to be able to join in this time, off to waters western...

Having thought I could make this one, I've now looked at the calendar and realised that we already have various things happening that weekend, notwithstanding hubby's current back problem. Typical! Will my kayak get wet this year? I certainly hope so. Will let you know if anything changes.

After my wife told me she might go visit her sister-in-law for a few days to enjoy some spa treatments, she had no option but to allow me a weekend pass.

You have no idea how desperately I need this! Just one question, if we want to use the facilities at the normal camp site, must we camp there as well, or can I camp with all of you and just walk down to use the facilities?

That's excellent, thanks Stewart. I'll have to see if the moths have eaten my tent - it's been years since I was under "canvas".

If anyone is considering this but reluctant (or unable) to bring a canoe, I can bring my "big green paddling machine" and offer a seat. Otherwise I think I might bring my little red solo canoe if there's no bumpy stuff.

What kind of canoe is the little red solo? ( I mean apart from being solo, little and red in colour, was thinking make, model)

Are Day-Visiting quasi-Maraudists permitted? (I ask as SWMBO is none too keen on sleeping in and/or under any of my tents/bivvy bags/tarps. Or maybe it's me?)

BTW Llangorse Lake is now, I think, nine and a half "squid" for a day ticket including launching. Have been there a couple of times recently and there's no official landing points/shore access other than the launch point. Could always hang off one of the buoys around the lake for a while for lunch though.

I just called the campsite (01873 770589) and they said there's no fee for day visitors. You're welcome to visit during the day.

    Hope to see you there!

OK here is the answer to some of the questions, yes day visitors welcome.
Bernie regarding your little red boat we will only go on the lake, if it is not too windy, as otherwise it just becomes a faff and not enjoyable. So think solo is fine
If folk feel that the best part of a tenner is too much for a lovely like with lots of wildlife and in stunning scenery (although Stewart tells me it is a bit busy in the summer with lots of other water-sport users) then we can do the canal both days, it is a big canal and there is plenty to see, even if we just go east one day and west the next. So as usual paddles will be decided by the campfire the night before and by consensus. Usual rules apply, and all the decisions are to suit the least skilled and able and without stress!!!

Will confirm with the owner whether to pay on arrival or if he wants me to pay in bulk and also confirm the campfire option.

Still plenty of room for more marauders

That are happy for me to collect fees and pay in one job lot. Also we can dig a fire pit so do all bring firewood if you can.

Are you planning to canoe on all three days, Fri/Sat/Sun? Or is Friday the "turn up to camp day"?

Being a likely day visitor what time do I need to turn up in the mornings to join in?

Friday is usually pitch up and make camp day. Some folk occasionally have a lil paddle. I have never known marauder to get going before 1030. So arriving before 10 will allow you to have a brew and get acquainted. See you soon.

It's the cooked breakfasts, faffing with boats and kits as well as snoozing that takes the time, and the marauders rule that it should not be too stressful or hurried

Just what I need. I was almost considering not bringing a canoe just so that I could enjoy the mornings and evenings without any stress. Possibly even a mid day snooze.

Sorry, double booked this one, for some reason, even though the dates are clear, in my head it was later in the month! Age...

I'll be getting wet the other side of the Irish Sea instead.

Marauder: "a person or animal that goes from one place to another looking for people to kill or things to steal or destroy"

How did this merry band of pleasure seekers get tarred with a name like that?

They misread it as "people to kiss, or drinks to steal or deploy".

    You have been warned.

$tewart some people are quicker learners than us others, besides you'd need a JCB to bury me. Have fun guys, regretably my chauffeur/ ,Minder is busy so we cannot attend. Definition of a Marauder is someone who did not understand the question

All being well I will be there around lunchtime. I will put colours hazard tape to point the way to the field. But you go up to the campsite farmhouse and round the back to the track up to the field.
