    Default Dove Tour 2017

Does anyone have any idea if this is planned for this year and if so when? I know that it wascancelled last year as the EA were working on one of the weirs.

I believe it is the 18-19 March. Information from Hinckley CC website. Not sure about the EA works.

    Info from Steve at BCC:

    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/bzwzmefiy...3fiMxdLOa?dl=0

The gist for those that don't want to download the PDFs:

"Access to this river is restricted to one weekend each year and offers an experience never to be forgotten, to any paddler making the trip for the first time. The overall trip is 11 miles, with lunch normally taken after 5 miles at the 1st weir. Water is Grade 1 to 1st weir, then Grade 1 - 2 there after. All weirs portagable. We advise paddlers check weirs on arrival.

Paddlers should arrive at the start, Aston Bridge A515 near Sudbury for 8-30 to 9am, to allow sufficient time to ferry drivers and their vehicles to the finish for the Tour to start at approx 10am. River briefing at 9.45am

James, you thinking of driving down Saturday, camping and then paddling Sunday?

If you find a campsite, let me know. I've got a new hammock frame I want to try out.

Should be there but not sure which day just yet, that could depend primarily on which day others are going and secondly if one day is going to have significantly better weather. It's in the diary though, a great trip previously and so much harmless fun watching people falling out of boats at the Tutbury weir.

Why do they say the river is restricted to one weekend per year? I can see parking might be an issue but that shouldn't restrict small groups the rest of the time

You turn up, sign on, pay for your return shuttle fee, drop your boat and gear then drive your car to the end and get the provided mini bus shuttle back to the start where your boat is waiting to be paddled down river to your car. Great organisation and a really good trip.

I/we hope to be on this trip again this year - bit weather dependent. Enjoyed it the last few years when its been held.

I don't subscribe to the 'only weekend in the year' malarkey, but its a fun and social trip.

    Sounds excellent.

Unfortunately, I've just been reminded I've got a literal pack of dogs to look after Saturday night, so I'm just going to have to zoom over and paddle Sunday morning.

I found a couple of campsites but don't think fires or hammocks permitted ... in fact, they seem to be catering for glampers and most pitches have EHU - please excuse the bad language!

The Cross Inn - on the plus side there's a bar, on the downside it has a dining room with red pelmets & matching seat covers :O

Where did you see it? Didn't come up in my searches!

Apache will be fine. You might get some gelcoat damage if you miss the shoot on the first weir though. Gary did - on his first paddle of the boat.

Saying that, I'd probably paddle the Ranger myself.

You might get some gel coat damage if you hit the shoot on the first weir too ... stop on the LHS above it and take a look to see if you want to run the shoot, the dog leg fish ladder alternative or to portage around instead.

The Apache would be fine, you'll need a decision on which way you go at the 1st weir whichever boat you take. Gary missed the chute entirely in his Apache so it was somewhat dramatic but worked out really well ... he didn't even swim ... those Apaches are strong

Apparently it helps if you stand up and shout "Geronimo!" as you go over the fist weir... this only works in Apache's apparently...

I will not be doing this as I don't want to give myself an unfair advantage!

8.30 for 9 start to get shuttle iirc.

Am I in danger of losing my camping buddy?

Why not portage the first and shoot the rest in the Apache?

Did you guys book the cross inn? I'm considering my options. It's looking pretty windy on the Sunday.

Day 1 was mainly clear with a bit of sun... was well looked after by members of the Hinckley Canoe Club!

    Weir 1: nailed it!
Weir 2: loved it - shipped s bit of water on the standing wave
    Weir 3: swam!

    Day 2... bring it on!

Sorry I/we didn't make it to the Dove - suffering a bit too much at the weekend - had all the energy of the other battery at the end of a Duracell advert, and all the enthusiasm of a Goth at a swimming gala.

    Hope everyone had brill time!.

In that case you made the right choice! Sunday was especially windy and some of the group were looking mutinous at a couple of points :-). Definitely not a low battery day! That being said, I noticed that the paddlers with more experience fared much better in the wind than those of us with less... which makes sense but is frustrating when you're expending a heroic amount of energy not really getting anywhere and someone smiles cheerfully at you as they cruise past.... at least, that's what if felt like :--D
