Default Canoe stores and dealers list

Would it be worthwhile to have a section listing Canoe and related equipment Shops and Dealers?

They come and go and I think it could be useful to have a list of what there is and where.

For clarity and usefulness, I think it would be best to keep it as a reference list only, with description, location and contact details for each. Leaving discussion of good/bad service etc. to be posted elsewhere.

Members could add dealers and suppliers they know about and it could soon build up to a useful resource.

I thought this would be useful if I could see the shops on a map so that I know which ones are close to me. But then I thought - Google Maps already does this if I just search for "Canoe shop".

What would differentiate this list ("register"?) from something like Google Maps?

My guess is that there are canoe shops that are not listed on Google Maps. If that was the case, would it not be better for us and the shops to get them listed there?

Well, Google maps shows some that are out of business. And doesn't show some that are in.

Nothing to stop people using it if they prefer.

I just thought SOTP is a useful resource and one place to go for all things canoe related. And we have control over it.

Bit like the place reference threads.

Sounds like it would have a "unique selling point" in that it would be more lovingly maintained. I'm all for it - worth a try anyway.

I think that it could be very useful, especially when out and about in unfamiliar territory.

Why not, seems a useful resource. As mentioned, would be best as a clear reference page, not a constantly edited thread.

Sadly, the list of specialist paddling shops is actually quite short. Another one closed recently - Hereford and Borders Canoe and Kayak near the Wye have ceased trading, the remaining operation moving to Escape Watersports in Bridgend.

It's a can of worms. Getting a comprehensive list and keeping it up to date is difficult enough but not insurmountable.

The main problem I see is you can't win regarding allowing comment or not. If no comment on quality is allowed on the thread you will have to list a shop you know has appalling levels of service, because it is a comprehensive list. As such you are giving it legitimacy as it is "approved" by SotP. If you miss out some shops you are accused of censorship.

If you do allow feedback on the listing thread then, well, I'm sure you can see how that could easily go pear shaped.

I'm not against the usefulness of this idea I just don't see an easy way to make it work.

Could you have a section where each shop could have its own thread? That way reviews can be posted but make it clear that posts will be moderated if they're extreme? Could be a sticky listing shops which is locked

Yes, that was what prompted me to think about this. A couple of shops in Scotland (Stirling and Perth) have now closed.

It would be useful to see where the nearest ones are.

Yes something of that nature would be the idea.

Will expand more in my reply to Mr. K.

We do also encourage people to put them on Paddle Points, but that's FAR from comprehensive.

Fair points, John, and here is what I would suggest to address them.

    1. I would take the Places Reference section as a model.

    2. Have a separate reference thread for each place- with description, location, links and contact details.

    3. Allow members to populate this section, by adding threads and info of places they know about. It would gradually grow with the onus being on the members (not admin ) to populate it.

    4. When new places come along they can be added by people and when places close that be flagged up too.

    5. It would not have to claim to be a comprehensive list, it would be up to members to add it, to help other paddlers. It would evolve and grow naturally.

    6. There could be two subsections within the main section. One for strictly factual reference information. The other could be entitled Feedback and be used for any feedback, opinons, comments on service etc.

    7. There could be a sentence or two at the top of the section, as there are in other sections on SOTP. Stating that an entry in the reference section is for information only and that it in no way constitutes an endorsement of the business. And that any comments and opinions should go in the Feedback subsection.

Anyway I reckon something along those lines could work and it could be a useful resource for for paddlers.

The places reference section as with the canoe review section require a lot of work. Starting threads is not allowed for general members as the section would be full of unrelated posts. The same would happen with a shops list. Limiting the starting of threads to admins or certain approved members adds more work for them but does allow the section to have some structure to list alphabetically or by area.

This opens up its own problems. If listed alphabetically finding the store nearest you may not be that easy. If listed by area some stores may lose out as they largely deal online so are losing out by only being listed in one area or an online store section.

We still have to figure out he fuels for members who run stores being allowed to or barred from starting threads about their store.

I see way more issues too but I don't want to sound too against this idea. I'm actually pretty keen on a listing of supplies / shops. It's why we have a Links thread in the reference section and a Material Suppliers thread in the self build section as these were relatively low maintainace options with not so much chance of hassle. Initially at least the section would need quite a bit of work.

If you want, Crow, you can create a listing thread and I will change your settings so you can edit the post any time. So you can add and remove shops as you find out about it. We can sticky it in an appropriate section and people can message you with information to add.

I like the idea of this and the first thing that sprang to mind was to talk to Mr. Cankey. Perhaps a second 'members map' could be produced specifically for canoe stores and dealers?
Members or indeed owners could then drop a pin with the details of the store. When visiting an area you could go straight to the map and see where your nearest store is located.

Tiso in Glasgow stock canoes and some paddling gear but not sure if you would include it or not. It probably comes into the same sort of cat agony as Decathalon would.

Well, they sell canoes and canoeing gear so I've put them in, as it may be useful to people.

Not listing all their branches though - I've just them in under 'Various Locations', and people can find their local branches from the websites.

    Thanks.

Manchester Canoes is already in the list (it's actually in Cheshire).

    I've added the other ones.

    Thanks.

Maybe someone could go through the dealer list of the more obvious UK manufacturers....

    E.g. http://www.venturekayaks.com/dealers.php?view=list

    E.g. http://www.houcanoes.com/ukdealers.html

Example - Nucleus appears on both of the above:

    Nucleus
    204 Frinton Road
    Clacton-on-Sea,
    Essex
    East Anglia
    CO15 5SP
    01255 812146
    Website

    Nucleus Watersports. Clacton, Essex - 01255 812146www.nucleuswatersports.co.uk

That's just one I happened to spot on a quick glance through.

For a more comprehensive listing, goto the PeakUK site:

    http://www.peakuk.com/index.php?rout...ntry&path=5_45

Anywhere that sells PeakUK is catering well for canoeists: top British made kit

Manufacture and sell stuff like this:

Just launched an innovative range of ultralight throwlines...

If anyone wants to do that, that's great.

    Meanwhile I've added Nucleus.

    Thanks for these.

Greg, do you want to supply details of your contacts in Germany and Austria? Could be useful.
