Default Dudley Tunnel trip 19th November.

By popular demand its back, the Dudley Canal Trust have a nice shiny new building but there is still access down onto the canal from the car park. Again sorry no dogs and a limit to 25 canoes / kayaks.

Again its an early start as we need to be through the tunnel before the boat trips start at 10, so I plan to start the trip just after 9.

An easy way to to add to the list is to click on "Reply with quote" below, and then remove the [ QUOTE ] and [ / QUOTE ] bits.

The start point is the Dudley Canal Trust as stated in the OP.

Hello everyone, I've just spotted this posting. Our Club, Royal Sutton Coldfield, are also doing a Dudley/Netherton trip on November 6th. We had a little difficulty getting CART to agree to us going through Netherton, but they have relented, and will be closing Netherton to powered traffic from 10 till 2pm on Sunday 6th Nov.
They are allowing all non-powered craft to go through that day if required.

Interesting, as we've never worried about Netherton, just gone through it en mass, well lit. Thanks for sharing.

I've kept an eye on this thread. As its normally oversubscribed, and I've had the pleasure of doing it with SOTP folk the last couple of times it ran, I thought I'd give others the opportunity to have a go. If, about a week before, there are any spaces, I may come and join you, but it only seems fair to give others the opportunity to enjoy this amazing day out first.

Interesting. I have heard back from the Canals and Rivers trust. They are having the netherton tunnel open to non powered craft on 6th Nov other wise it is closed to us. As I don't fancy walking through the tunnel I am thinking about a switch to the 6th Nov, subject to a reply from the Dudley Tunnel trust. What are people's thoughts on this.

I am happy with the date switch as walking through the tunnel does not appeal particularly if we can paddle it on the 6th.

The 6th is OK with me too. Although the bazillion lumen head torch I have just ordered on Amazon probably won't make it from China in time . Got christmas tree lights though so all's dandy.

Either date fine with me, just about enough time to recover from Church . But as I'm currently last on the list, I'm happy to defer to those higher up.

6th November is fine for me, the extra time available will make it a more leisurely trip.

Can I ask if both trips are going ahead or just one and is there a limit on the number of canoes on the 6th. I would imagine Dave B is a bit put out that his simple trip has become complicated albeit with the best intentions.

I have checked with the Dudley Tunnel trust and they are unable to move my date to the 6th, so am sticking with the 19th Nov. The Netherton tunnel is out I am afraid, though the Canal trust is opening it to canoes on the 6th Nov. This is for the trip that Royal Sutton Coldfield club are doing, so it might be worth contacting them if you can not make the 19th Nov trip.

I am sorting out the arrangements with the Dudley tunnel trust and the Canals and rivers trust but my plan is to go through the Dudley tunnel then return to the start, before having a paddle along the Birmingham Canal navigations.

So…the trip on the 6th INCLUDES the tunnel, but is being organised by the Royal Sutton Coldfield Club?, and your trip on the 19th DOES NOT include the tunnel?
Do we have to re-register our interest with the Sutton club in order to 'tunnel paddle', or does the above list carry across so to speak? if we have to contact them - do you have any numbers for us?
    Thanks!

There are two tunnels - the main Dudley tunnel requires an escort and the Royal Sutton Coldfield Club have booked for the 6th, Dave B has booked for the 19th.
The Royal Sutton Coldfield Club have also got permission to use the Netherton tunnel for their trip by getting it closed to other traffic.
As Mal Grey suggested above, some canoeists just go through the Netherton without permission. Obviously something that we'd never do.

Were we escorted through the Netherton in 2014? Or have rules changed?

Because I have a vague memory of being in the tunnel with canal boats.

So to clarify - before I haul everything down from Tyneside on the 19th for a trip involving a tunnel, this is the correct date, correct tunnel, and correct permissions?

In 2014 we just paddled through the Netherton Tunnel and completed the whole loop. I do remember the air being filled with noises and a strange odour when paddlers were suddenly confronted with a couple of narrow boats coming the other way through the tunnel. No one died.

I believe that what Dave is suggesting is that on the 19 th we paddle through the first tunnel,(Dudley) emerge into daylight, turn around and then paddle back the way we came. All of this has to be done before they open the tunnel to motorised craft. When we have done the there and back through the Dudley Tunnel we will go and paddle a bit of the canal network. Because the other tunnel is closed to canoes on the 19th we cannot do the long loop. Slap me Dave if I have assumed incorrectly.

I am running the trip on 19th Nov, the plan is to paddle through the Dudley Canal, then return back through the same tunnel. Then paddle over a circular route arriving back for the second time.

The Royal Sutton Coalfield Canoe Club are running their trip through both the Dudley and Netherton tunnel on the 6th November, and if you want to that trip you will need to make contact with them.

Blott is correct, I think that the people in the narrow boats were a bit worried then they saw what looked like a load of boats heading towards them (massed torches) and what sounded like a Ocean Liner heading towards them (a trumpet I think).

Sorry to mess people about as I am having to reformulate the trip with the closure of the Netherton Tunnel to us.

Do you want me to do a new list? removing the ones that can not make the 19th.

Just to confirm, the RSCCC trip on the 6th is Members only, and we are fully booked anyway. Netherton Tunnel is open to anyone on the 6th Nov., CART said rather than just let one group through, they will allow anyone through in the 4 hour window,

Hello Dave. Thank you for sorting this out, sorry for the extra hassle. But can I just clarify if a separate group did want to go through the Dudley tunnel on the 6th would it be possible for that extra group to get permission? I know you said that they would not move your date, but are they willing to let another group through on the 6th ?
    John.
