    Of particular interest to me as I had a number of ancestors in the fur trade, one of whom, Joseph Girard, was at a post within 100 miles of where I live, in 1804 (long before white settlement of this area).

    There is a journel extant of that year. I've been particularly intrigued by an entry stating a messenger snowshoed from Montreal to the post with news of the merger of two rival fur trade organizations. That is a 1000 mile snowshoe trek.
