Default Marauders somerset levels 24-27 june 2016 - doolittles campsite

    Greetings Marauders

Have now confirmed with Wendy at Doolittles our tenure at the site 24-27 June, http://www.doolittlescaravan-camping.co.uk/. Dog's and children at owner's discretion but if we get enough we will have the site to ourselves, (small dogs are welcome anyway) I will check with Wendy if we are the sole bookers of the site.

Paddles on the Parrett / Bridgwater Taunton Canal as last time. Possibly a venture down to the Grand Western which is about half an hour away if we want, anyhow that can be sorted nearer the time.

    So far the list is

Hi Uncle Albert and Marauders. I have added my name to the list, although the kayak hasn't had an outing since the autumn. Didn't make this one last year so looking forward to new water. A friend might join the list too (Helen).

Your very welcome Helen, I hope you find us acceptable, I don't know what Sheila has told you about this group of slightly questionable bunch of paddlers, but I am sure you are looking forward to finding out (Uncle Albert waits for a reaction from the Marauding folk)

Thanks for the welcome.......I am wondering in the opposite direction i.e. what Sheila has told you about me! She started me off paddling last year and hope to do more this year.....still very green.
    See you in June

Hi Gang, could I put myself forward as a possible for this trip please! I will need to clear it with work first before I can confirm.

This will be my first outing in 2 years due to health problems, I have in the past paddled with Ted & two sugars on a couple of occasions. This sounds like a great meet up and a perfect time for me to get back on the water.

    Best regards Paul

Well I was pleased to report that work have graciously allowed me time off work to join you good people on this jolly in Somerset.

I am also sad to report that I have just gone and broke my toe.

I was having a senior moment on going upstairs to get changed when my brain switched off and I couldn't decide which foot to move first and the resulting stumble left me with a broken toe.

I hasten to add no alcohol was involved in the tumble, maybe that's were I went wrong.

Anyway at this present time I am sorry to say that I am back on the maybe list for now.

    Best regards Paul

Sorry to hear that Paul, strap the toe to the next one plus alcohol for pain relief, and that bulldog spirit will see you through.

    Kind regards Ted.

Hoping for a healing spring then Paul....I am sure someone will make a pun out of what I have just said. But to avoid contention I hope your toe heals well during the spring!!

I should say for newbies. We that organise these meets say there are no hard and fast rules. Suffice to say this site is a working farm and They do allow dogs. I will ask Wendy if we have the site exclusively thus allowing dogs of all sizes and what she is charging us this year. Other than that just pitch up and be prepared for a good time.

OK here are the details, there are 2 other units booked in for that weekend but they will be on the right hand side of the track when we come in, so we have free run of the place, hence any dogs are allowed and children, as long as the dogs are tethered, the kids can run free!! We are booked from Friday 24th through till Monday 27th, but you can arrive when you want. Also apart from the first to arrive, no need to go to reception, you will see other Marauders so just make your pitch, caravans and motorhomes welcome but not very very large vans or motorhomes. Electric hook up available for quite a few pitches too.

There is a fire pit there and not sure if we will get free use of firewood so if any of you can bring anything that will help.

The site has a shower and a couple of toilets, and washing up facilities and taps in the field.

Now for pricing, Wendy has put prices up this year but not for regular groups, given the choice between charging 12 per unit per night and 7.50 per person per night as most of us appear to be in single units I have opted for the per person option. Please do not pay the owners direct, they like it when I take a wadge of cash!! No comments on this please, it is a family site!! Please remember to bring some of those funny paper money things then, as I dont have an aperture for taking plastic personally!!

Err that looks like all I can say, I will be there on the Friday, but it is still about seven weeks away and we have Brassknocker first - not sure If I can make that one. But for those like Fathom who are newbies this gives you the basic details in advance

I have been offered a bell tent to try as I was thinking of getting one the problem is the one being lent is a 5m family sized job will there be enough space? I don't want to take over the site, I can bring our usual tent if it is a problem.

I believe at least two people had a 5m bell tent last time - the Loggers and BaldManJump
So plenty of room as BMJ has taken to tarping as he wants to be like "hard as nails" Bonarmbj
And sadly the Loggers cannot make this meet

Mine's a 4m... and a feeling the loggers is too. But we were pitched opposite each other and didn't seem to cause any problems.

I'll be trying to remember to bring a tent this time!!!

Well... The best laid plans and all that. Had emergency surgery today and no exertion for 2 weeks . No paddling or lifting boats, doubt I'll be allowed to put a tent up.
Been looking forward to this one and it's quite close to home, so if I'm feeling up to it would it be possible to come along without a canoe? And ask people to bang tent pegs in for me??

OK as most of you will know Glastonbury clashes with our equally important calendar date, Michael and Emily Eavis were asked to reschedule for for some reason they declined. That could mean traffic issues for those arriving on the Friday although a lot of Festival goers will be there by friday. I would think that the busies roads will be the A37, A39 and the A361, I will try and put regular updates on here on the day if I hear of any traffic difficulties. The A303 could be busy and the M5 has it's usual holiday friday issues I would think.

I won't be able to get there till about 5 on the Friday due to me having to work, but that's life. The only good news is my office is 20 minutes from the site, so not far to go after work!!

Wendy at Doolittle's has said we can pay last year's rates even though her site fees have gone up, so we have a choice at 7.50 per person, or 12.50 per unit I think the per person option looks best, as most of us are single units, I am sure if there are those of you with 2 or 3 in your group I am sure, we can come to an arrangement.

If you are going to be the first to arrive then please let Wendy the owner know you have arrived, and she will direct you to where we are camping, from then on no need to report to the cottage as we pay in bulk at the end of the weekend.

Other than that the weather forecast so far is a slightly damp week brightening up for the weekend, but it is Glastonbury and Wimbledon so who knows.

I am assuming they still have the fire pit, we blagged some timber of John last time but bring some spare firewood if you have some.

This site does have a limited amount of electrical hook ups, one shower, and 2 x loos so it is a bit posh for us, I understand we have the site to ourselves apart from one booking who will be camped outside of our allotted areas.

Please remember it is a working farm with sheep so dogs should be under control or on a leash, children are allowed and should be similarly under control, leashes optional.

It is a bit tricky to find the site but Sat Nav gets you pretty close, the nearest shop / pub is in the village of North Curry, otherwise it is Taunton which has a 20 minute drive. http://www.doolittlescaravan-camping.co.uk/ for address and directions.

If you don't have my mobile and want it then send me a private message on here and I will send it to you.

Other than that it will be good to see you all this weekend.

We're still hoping to be there though I've not paddled much recently due to trench foot I think I spend to long in the water! But I really want to try this bell tent out.
