Default Dove Tour - Sat March 19th, Sun March 20th

    It's coming up...

    Who's going this year?

11 miles of grade 1 - moving water.. 3 fun weirs. Lunch stop just below the 'hardest' weir, so you can watch everyone falling in. Can do it either Saturday or Sunday.

Have done it the last couple of years, great event by Burton Canoe Club.

Details haven't been confirmed yet, but it's usually meet in a field outside Burton on Trent for 9ish, dump boats and then take the cars to the end. Minibus shuttles laid on for IIRC 5.

    First weir:

    My preference is Saturday.

But that's just a preference. Sunday would be fine if more people can make Sunday.

50/50 at the moment then, you do Saturday then you can let me know if its worth turning out Sunday

Give it a go. Great laugh, really well organised, hassle free with the minibus shuttle.

I've done it for the last two years. In two different boats. Actually, I'll be doing it this year in a different boat...

    2014 - Ontario, 3 swims.
    2015 - Vertige X, 0 swims.
    2016 - Freedom Solo, TBC.

    Not a race.

The trick is to get there early, get on the water quick... and get down the first weir before the other opens make it there.

Then you can have lunch and laugh at everyone else.

Might have to sleep in my van somewhere near the start to avoid a 5am start then. You know what were like up here for beauty sleep.

I've occasionally done both days ... there is the alternate fish ladder option at Weir One, a ~ 40 degree slope to a solid 90 degree bend ... it's do-able without hitting the wall head on. Portage is a fairly easy option here too.
Weir 2 is fun, it can/has been portaged, working out where & how you can get out and then back in here has in the past been a little tricky.
Weir 3 is rather dependent on water levels on the day, can be really good or sort of oooh, err ... good to look at from the top and then decide, fairly easy portage, can be a bit muddy at the get in from recollection.
It's looking like Sun for me currently.

They're not very strict about pre-booking.

I usually drop them an email a couple days before with a rough guestimate of how many SOTPers are turning up.

This campsite allows fires 20 mins from the put in and only 5 per night if anyone is interested. http://www.woodfarmadventure.co.uk/

Hopefully I'll be doing the run on Sunday along with Apache Goerge. We'll try to do what Per recommends, get there early to sort out the shuttle bus, get down the the first weir and then relax and watch the fun!

The latest from Burton Canoe Club:

    RIVER DOVE TOUR LATEST -CANCELLED
This relates to advertised tour dates of 19th & 20th March 2016.
    Please read to end.
Due to commencement of Fish Pass construction works at the second weir-Marston Weir, we have taken decision to cancel the tour.
During works, there is no practical portage or ability to inspect weir at close quarters from the bank. Access and egress are also compromised at this location. This has changed risk assessment of Tour. In event of raised river levels on planned weekend, the above could be brought into even more focus.
This decision was reached reluctantly, but safety and due care of paddlers was paramount in forming ultimate cancellation.
Thank you for taking time to read this post and we hope to back in action next year.

Could do... Probably be better leaving it to April though. Dee is up and down like a yo-yo at the moment.

Long way for you to drive to sit in a shed in Wales for two days because the river is too high.

Thanks for the post about cancellation. Look forward to it every year, not looking for a circular trip in the area, any suggestion. I have done the Haywood trip.
