Default Easter on The Norfolk Broads

Come and join us for a weekend of camping and canoeing on "Britain's Magical Waterland."

Our venue will be the Barton Turf Adventure Centre hosted by Simon and Sheila See here: http://www.btac-services.co.uk/content.htm

You can camp, bring a van (but numbers are limited), self cater or be catered for with Sheila's home cooked breakfasts and evening meals.

The Easter weekend is at the end of March. I would suggest a 1, 2 or 3 night stay depending on your commitments.

The dates are Good Friday March 25th through to the Bank Holiday Monday 28th March

The booking form can be found here :- http://www.btac-services.co.uk/booki...rticipants.pdf

I can sort some paddle routes out and one which I do fancy is the upper Bure from Aylsham above Buxton Mill which, out of the fishing season should be a nice paddle. There will be the opportunity for paddles on the River Ant, Barton Broad and other local waterways with the chance to sail on the Broad. Otters, kingfishers and Wherry's will be seen both on and off the water!

These weekends are always great social events with some lovely flat water paddling.

Come along, You Know it Makes Sense!

    Sounds good to me Nick!

A chance now to further chip the recent Christmas presents, maybe?

I've penciled the dates into my diary, and will now hope for the best... Having 'booked off' all my holiday and 'off time' for 2016 by the end of October last year, only to notice 'reet the noo' thanks to this post, that none of the dates of which I have entered into my little black book!...

Trying hard now not to panic Mr. Mainwaring!

Might be able to make this, as not off to Scotland until the following week. Will confirm later.

Thanks Nick, that's a great idea - until we are both swimming at the same time! I'm looking forward to it already. The top coat of gloss on the hull is currently drying......
Happy New Year to you too.

Simon and Sheila of BTAC are probably on winter shut-down/maintenance/downtime etc, so are not always able to answer the phone - try an email?

    Hi Keith

    That makes sense.

I tried emailing last week and phoning this week. I'm sure it'll get sorted soon.

Hopefully I will be at the meeting along with my wife, kids and dog.

    See you all there.

    Cheers,

    Robin

They were away up here in the Lakes at the weekend at an OCSG meet - I'm sure they'll be back in circulation soon.
Not sure if I'll make the meet at Easter myself but there may be some other sailing canoes - we've put it on our calendar of meets to add to the mix.

Nick, your right, it does make sense. Baring anything annoying I will be there for a night or two, as my winter canoe hibernation will be coming to an end by then.

The Commodore and Roger the Cabin Boy will be attending but not sure which days/nights - will book friday night and sat night I reckon as Roger is a bit concerned about the cold that time of year and can't as yet be talked into the full weekend.

Will be bringing my sailing gear as it sounds like there might be some sailing activities.

I'm just about coming out of hibernation, complicated by a move which should be all over by the time you come.

    I've got bookings from:
    Paul & Sue
    Pete & Fiona
    Nick & Angelika
    Alan & Louise
    Robin & Gemma + 2
    Geoff
    Mark-Jan
    Steven & Veronica

In theory we're not supposed to book more than 3 'vans, but I make that 5, so some of you may have to pretend to sleep in a tent.
I suspect there are others who have said they are coming but who haven't booked yet.
    Booking form is at http://www.btac-services.co.uk/booki...rticipants.pdf
Booking is not essential (but desirable) if you are going to self-cater.
Booking IS essential if you want to eat any of Sheila's food!
Pay on arrival, card or cash; if you want to use PayPal (to admin@btac-services.co.uk) or a cheque pay in advance please.

    See you then

    Hi Simon,
I sent you an email with the booking form completed from your website and you haven't got Jenny and I on the list. We booked a caravan pitch. You have Steve and Veronica on the list they booked two weeks after us as I told him about the event. Can we turn up on Thursday afternoon if we have a place on the event.

I think that we are now getting close to capacity for the site and the services. Simon please chirp up and say "whoa"! when you need to. No one will be offended.

Its not a Big Meet........its always wet and windy at Big Meets and in the east we try not to do that!

OK. Due to the numbers I need to say that this trip is now FULL.

There is a maximum capacity which the showers, loos and septic tank at the centre can cope with and I believe we are now at that figure if not slightly exceeded it.

I will post some trip/paddle details soon but we will have to split into a few groups to make the trips manageable and less "intrusive" to the Broads environment...if that makes sense to people.

    OK.

    Here are some suggestions:-

Friday- Most people will be arriving, setting up camp and then a late afternoon pootle around Barton Broad will be good for most.

Other paddles which I would suggest are:-

Saturday:- I have arranged with the Pleasure Boat Inn at Hickling that we can park at the far end in their car park, launch at the Staithe and paddle across and around Hickling Broad, into Heigham Sound and then up Meadow Dyke into Horsey Mere. We can stop for lunch at Horsey Wind Pump where there is a Tea Room and toilets. We will then return to Hickling. We have to make payment for the use of the car park which means that we have to go in the pub and drink beer on our return; I have said we will. A fair deal. Its about a 12 KM (7 1/2 mile round trip paddle)

If you don't want to do Hickling you can paddle up the River Ant and go past Wayford Bridge and up the Dirham Canal to Honing Lock. A return trip of 16 KM ( 10 miles)

Sunday:- I would suggest splitting the group. Some will drive to Hoveton, put in onto the Bure at the riverside park by Roys Car Park ( the cars can be left for free in the long stay car park). Paddle downstream through Wroxham, past Wroham Broad, Hoveton Great Broad, Salhouse Broad, through Horning and then eventually turn off the Bure and turn into Ranworth Dam which leads to Malthouse Broad. Lunch can be taken at Ranworth, where there is a shop and , hooray a pub!. 11.8 KM so far. Meanwhile the other group will leave Barton Turf, paddle across Barton Broad, down the Ant past How Hill and join the Bure. They will turn upstream and will then head and meet the other group for lunch at Ranworth. They would have paddled 11.5 KM so far. After lunch the group will set off back to Barton Turf up the Bure, Ant and across Barton Broad. We can split into small paddling groups. At the end we can go and fetch the cars left at Hoveton and then have the group meal at BTAC . The total distance paddle for both groups will be in the order of 23 Km(14-15 miles) over the day.

On the Friday afternoon and Monday morning people can do what they like, paddle the Ant, Dilham Canal, Barton Broad, or go get beer at Woodfordes Brewery.

You will need to be aware of:-

    1. You must take responsibility for your own safety. Have the correct kit, pdf, just in case bag etc. Be aware of the conditions which on large expanses of open water like the Broads can and do change rapidly. Be prepared. Hope for the best, pack for the worst case scenario. If you are going off on your own let us know.

    2. You will need to bring your BCU ticket. It gives you access to the Broads. If not you need to sort a Broads Authority permit. Don't think " They will never check". Well they do and I have been asked to produce my BCU ticket previously.

    3. Pack a map & compass. It is easy to get disorientated amongst the reeds.

    4. You will need packed lunches for 2 days, a flask etc. Normal canoe trip stuff.

    5. Be aware of other river users. It is the Easter weekend so cruisers will be about. If you see a nice wooden boat the likelihood is that the person at the helm knows exactly what they are doing as they do not want to damage their pride and joy. The hire boats are a different matter; many do not know their bow from the stern, port from starboard and are unaware that there is a speed limit. They will crush a moored canoe without batting an eyelid. So be aware and give them lots of room.

    6. On leaving the Broads you must was your canoe throughly. There is a hose at BTAC. We do not want to spread the invasive species which include the killer shrimp.

7 and finally........... this is a social weekend on Britain's Magical Waterline. We normally have a great time, paddling, chilling and socialising. Come with an open mind, a few bottles of hooch and enjoy yourself. There will be deer barking, owls hooting and if you are lucking an otter sighting for those up early. Wherries on and off the water too. I will bring a group shelter and a fire bowl.

    See you there.

I would like to have everyone at the Pleasure Boat Inn Car Park at Hickling for 9.45am on the Saturday. It's 20 mins or so from BTAC.

The Group meal is on the Saturday evening at BTAC with 33 booked in.

OK to just bring this up todate. I believe we have 43 booked (ish) That is those on the campsite. I am aware that Mark-Jan Daelemans and his family are on a boat. Some are coming just for a day. The Group Meal is Saturday Night ( I had originally planned it for this night but in rejigging the paddling trips it was showing as Sunday doh!!). We have 33 is booked for the Saturday Night Group Meal but the following have not booked so if you wish to eat get on to Simon at BTAC. Those not booked for the meal are Robin & Gemma, Fran Faulkner, Peter Robinson, Geoff & Cherry Forrester.

Friday will be a get camp set day and people to potter about. On the Saturday we need a prompt start. We are driving over to Hickling so have a canoe and gear loaded and ready to leave BTAC about 9.15am so we can get parked and on the water in good time. Some are arriving late Saturday so we can catch up with them then. Weather looks variable but in the East you never know. Hope for the best, pack for the worst and don't forget your Easter eggs. I will get there late morning Friday so come and introduce yourself (Look for a blue Land Rover). Its an OCA even so I will need you to complete a form with personal details etc; just in case. OCA subs come due at the end of March so I trust that Alan Mellor and Rich Wright will be badgering people to get renewed. As I used to say to my Scout Group "No pay, no play" ! See you Friday.

This might be best discussed on the Friday eve but currently weather forecast is for STRONG wind on the saturday - southerlies gusting to over 40mph according to XCweather! I wonder if its possible to arrange a south to north one-way route (with shuttle) that means there will be less paddling against what may prove to be quite a stiff breeze.
