Updated THE Paddle's journey on the Member's Map, it will continue its Midlands tour at the end of Oct at Anchor Church, and move on ...

(Still a work in progress - need to figure why the paddle handle renders darkly and modify lighting and textures ....)

Would be good to fill in the TBA's/Unknowns from early on in its journey ...

Hi Cankay, to fill in my bits, we were on the Tees and the Leven on 9th June 2014 and picked the paddle up from Mojo19. I presume he had it on the Ouse. I handed it on at the York charity race. I thought it was to BigAl. I'll check the blog and add to this.
No, BigAl had his hands on it, but mayobren got it in July 2014

The Warwickshire Avon was where I handed it over to Mal.........I believe you were on that trip Mr Cankay........you and young Albatross had to leave early

Cheers Bren, found the blog and photo evidence.... nice photo of The Paddle in action, but I can't tell who is wielding it, as Mal has the next three on the list and was probably taking the photos, I'll go with your name until advised to the contrary.

The eagle eyed amongst you may have spotted that THE Paddle has been on its own wee journey. Based on a someones else's suggestion, and with John's permission, THE Paddle has been defaced and has a bit of a new look.

    original-> sanded -> pencilled and pyro'd -> oiled

Hope this is okay with you all!

If you are a future recipient, please re-oil as needed.

The paddle has already been handed over again ....

The paddle has moved on and i'm in possesion after it's subservient existence with Jimmyads, whom has paddled the R. Idle, R. Lune, and a canal that I don't remember the name of!! (James you need to fill in the blanks).

The hand over took place at Chainbridge lane bridge on the R. Idle, after the 5th Idle Xmas paddle, and shall be looked after over the Christmas period were it will quite possibly be fed and watered!

At the moment it has no plans to go anywhere so if you want to be marked down in it's history, send me a PM and we can hatch a plan to paddle water and drink tea before allowing it to continue it's epic journey.

You might want to check the Quoile too..?

Nevertheless, the list is becoming quite impressive after 3 years or so:

    35 listed places paddled
    34 different rivers or lakes
6 countries: Scotland, England, Wales, France, Ireland, Northern Ireland
25 people and skeletons used it, plus plenty of non-listed associates.

(There's a good chance I've miscounted some of these...)

The skeleton is the most impressive!

End of Jan update. Not much paddle movement, but Lagan amd Quoile spelt betterly.
Wood now changed to be procedurally generated rather than image based.

I've just looked at the listing, the SotP paddle was in my canoe for a few minutes at the SotP Loch Ken Big Meet (before being returned to Rockhopper) and it looks as if I kept it for nine months ... I need more SotP Paddle time ... where is local ... you can't be that far away

... and I quite fancy a paddle on the River Don, Potty ... from Doncaster, walked the banks of, sledged the fields beside down to the river, caught sticklebacks in ... but yet to paddle on the River Don

Paddle on the Don(club is at Kelham Island, Sheffield) most Sundays, may be over at Matlock in the near future, but sure we can arrange a mutual "handover" location!

Thank you jonah aka (Mark) ... super to meet up with you and of you and the team at SCKC to introduce me to paddleing on the River Don ... the video seems to have worked, it needs more than a little editing though. Looking forward to meeting up again at the Big(gish) Meet later this month.

The SotP paddle ... wow ... it looks/feels sooo different to the way it did when it was briefly in my canoe on Loch Ken. The paddle will be visiting Tittesworth Reservoir, Rudyard Lake, the Caldon Canal (for part of the Stoke-on-Trent Heritage Canoe Trail), the Trent & Mersey Canal (also Heritage Trail), Longton Park Lake and possibly elsewhere. I'll give it a treat of Danish Oil before I pass it on ... tentative plan being to pass it on at the above mentioned Big(gish) Meet as I'm sure there might be one or two SotP members there who might like to introduce THE paddle to places new.

Any volunteers for "Pass the Paddle" at Barrow?

THE paddle has now visited Rudyard Lake (Tues) and New Horizons Sport & Leisure Centre at Chell (Thurs, free "Come & Try It" kking session, there is another one 11-12:00 on 17-08-2017). It will be at Tittesworth Reservoir tomorrow for the TWS Birthday Bash, on the Caldon Canal for the Stoke-on-Trent "City Adventures" Heritage Trail on Sunday and at Longton Park Lake for most of the rest of the week. Sat 12th at the "Middleport Matters" Community Event on the Trent & Mersey Canal, Sun 13th Darley Dale to Matlock Baths .... and on towards the Biggish Meet ... unless anyone grabs it before then of course.

Potty Paddler handed the paddle to Autumn the co-pilot and skipper of Dougoutcanoe. She proudly paddled parts of the River Soar during participation in Jon's Biggish Meet.

So, now the Song of the Paddle paddle has reached a dark corner of Lancashire. I will take the paddle for a splash in Sweden.

Now that it has reached Lancashire, who will be next?

Mike (Potty) can you nominate/identify 2/3 months/location/paddler from when the paddle was in your care & I can update the Journey Board accordingly & I'll add Autumn @ Barrow :-).

It's also handy to have a lat/long or specific location so I can update the paddles journey on the MembersMap (sometime !).

I will take the paddle for a splash in Sweden.
Pretty sure that will be its furthest reach todate :-).

Hi all, I need to find an SotP member willing to take on the continuing journey of the Paddle.

I will be out on Windermere from the 3 to the 5 April with Autumn the official holder. If someone wants to meet for a paddle and takeover bid, PM me for more details.

I will be on the Wye, from Whitney Toll Bridge morning of the 9 April, then paddling down to Byecross for that evening, 10 April will be to Hereford Rowing Club, finally the 11 April to Hoarwithy. Join me and my friends for any or all of it.

    PM for further details.

I'm going up to Lancaster and back on Saturday (29 Sep 2018) from Exmouth so I could help the paddle cross the great North-South divide.

(Taking my son to uni with a LOAD of stuff so there won't be an opportunity to paddle sadly.)

Hi Al, the paddle is in my care and awaiting a new journey. I've had it too long, I know. Autumn loved using the paddle and I have a collection of photos of its travels.

Maybe Bhofmann can take it away, from me. I've been trying to pass it on for a while.

Its longest trip with me, was to Dalsland, Sweden on the lakes of Vastra Silen and Lelang. Where it met Preben Motisen our usual canoe outfitter over there. I look after and assess Duke of Edinburgh expeditioners when doing their qualifying expeditions out there.

Preben Mortisen, at Risviken, on the shore of Vastra Silen. He is still running the business with his wife. He is 86 years old this year. He started the business in 1956. 14 years ago when I started visiting Preben's place in Sweden, the facilities were primitive. The toilets were tiny sheds over a hole in the ground, and very smelly!

The paddle in the grasp of a tree man, Windermere.

Recovered by Autumn! Is this the result of camping with Granddad on Windermere in October 2017?

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to get your hands on it Bernie.

(I've done the uni trip a few times, at least you don't have to do a ferry crossing)

You've put a lot of miles on it Doug, and good to see Autumn with it too.

Now if I can just remember to call Dough on the way home to arrange the handover behind a cafe off the beaten track :P the paddle will be making it's way south. I know a fair few people down here who would put some miles on it before passing it on.

I handed the "Song of the Paddle" Paddle to Bernie, this afternoon after his long drive to Lancaster University with his son.

We caught up a little way south on his way home but the encounter was brief. He had a long way to go!

A photo was taken by Mrs Bernie, sorry I forgot your name. No doubt we will see it here soon.

Looking forward to the further adventures of the paddle.

    Cool

It was indeed a long day; over 600 miles, 10 and a half hours of driving. I'm sorry we didn't get to have a cuppa and chat about the grand tour the paddle is making, but I'm glad we didn't stay much longer or we wouldn't have made it home in time to buy some essentials for today. My wife and I were exhausted by the time we got home. I told my wife before we got there that she'd have to take a photo. She didn't understand the importance of the paddle, let alone the handing over ceremony. Pah - not a paddler.

Excuse my squinting, the sun was very bright!

I've not had a chance to use it yet (grape picking this morning at a local vineyard and meeting friends for drinks and dinner in a few hours). But I'm pleased as punch to have the opportunity and responsibility of showing this paddle a few new waters and passing it on to the next person down this way.

The "Song of the Paddle" Paddle was passed on in idyllic conditions and only a mile from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Appley Bridge. Nearby the canal and River Douglas escort each other to the sea via the River Ribble estuary. Before the canal the Dougie was used to transport stuff to the sea.

At Gathurst locks, the river and canal are crossed by the Southport to Manchester rail line. Towering over all three is the Gathurst Viaduct M6.

ps. Please note the white knuckle grips, we have on the paddle, in the handover photo!

If peeps from Mike (Potty) onwards (or indeed any one missing) want to let me know ...

    Date (Month)
    Paddler Name/Avatar Name,
    Location

then I'll happily update the "Journey Board" - possibly also the paddles' location on the 'members map' if I can remember how I did that (need a proper Google Map key now too :-( ).

Probably no more than two entries per person on the board? (to help encourage its movement between paddlers .... )

I'm so sorry it's gone quiet here. I've had the paddle out on a few trips a while back but since knackering my shoulder I've not been on the water in months. I'm up near Dundee/Perth next week and would like to hand it over to someone who'll get it wet a little bit more often than me. It's currently stood in the corner of my bedroom (much to my wife's disgust). I'm driving up from Devon so anywhere along the M5/M6 would also be an option.

In the mean time, a few photos from its travels:
