It would certainly be the fastest conversion of an ordinary boat into a narrowboat.

Thanks for posting this Mal, I have fond memory's of this very Lock, my sister lived in Buckland, contrary

to popular belief it is not in middle earth, but a village near Tring. More damage due to all that rain, I hope

    it will soon be repaired.

I know this lovely spot well and used to live nearby. Hope there is cash to fix it.

Think they're looking at summer before its done, which is somewhat of a problem for the local hire companies on the wrong side of the lock.

Buckland did indeed remind me of Middle Earth. Though I don't remember the Fellowship battling through a lock whilst being assaulted by Ringwraiths? Or did a Balrog collapse the lock side? Which SOTP member is Gandalf?

Is it the water table dropping or rising? Very close to where I live 300m of the river Mersey bank has collapsed . Despite what was written in the quoted article, it has been suggested that this occurred because the river level was made very low for work to take place after heavy rain. When the river was lowered there was no longer a force to hold the bank back and the high water table caused the waterlogged ground slipped into the river. As far as I know no-one has been found responsible but the river has been kept very much higher since.

I wonder what the lock collapse sounded like and how fast it went. Scary stuff!

Luckily I don't think there are any hire companies the wrong side of that, it's a short, 6 mile branch of the GU. There will be a number of private boats though. Nice part of the world, I quite like walking the towpath around there.

Seeing this makes me glad that I get out before locks, lift my raft out, walk past the lock and put back in!
