Default Photo Scavenger Hunt - September

Hi all, this month's scavenger subject is: BLUE

Here are the "rules" posted by MK in the first (February) competition:

You can enter up to 5 times. You can do this all at once or over the month. The photos are to try and best fit in with the theme. At the end of the month I will pick a winner who will set the next theme and pick the next winner and so on.

Pictures can be taken anywhere but the preference is for canoe, tripping and general outdoors. Nothing is set in stone and the details may change over time as we see how the competition goes.

Well, strictly speaking, it's not specified that the photo should have been taken by the poster (or poster's friend/family member), but it's implied. So it's my judgement for this month that only original pictures (as far as i can tell) will be considered.

    Thanks all

    Good luck!

    G

this is one of my fave shots ever. ive always loved flat water reflections, this was taken almost by mistake, i pointed the camera over my shoulder towards the sunset, and just pressed the button. 999 times in a thousand you get all sky or all water, blurred shaddows or indistinct nothing. but that 1 other tome, you get this. its blue skies reflected in blue water, i love it cos its dreamy, end of day cool paddling in the shade, heading for a hot shower and a cold beer! theres even a canoe hiding in there if you look hard.

sod work, im off for a paddle.

    Hi Folks,

A recent trip to Norway and Crow's theme for the photo scavenger hunt inspired this collection. All my own work and taken during the last 4 weeks.

    Dougoutcanoe plays Rhapsody in Blue.

    The Blue Door

    There are Blue Skies over....

I hear bells ringing. Ok, Harebells in Norway.

    Blue Lavvo.

    Blue Ice

    That concludes the Dougoutcanoe submission!

I hope I have not broken any rules?

    Default Blue

Tried to keep a 'water' theme running through, Ely Cathedral aka Ship of the Fens, blue neon tetras in the background, the Morpho is actually above a terrapin filled pond ( out of sight) my lad on the water etc etc.

    cristal slice

Blue Lagoon macro shot - - - - there's a world of oceans & mountains within the cristal.

Morpho butterfly. Waited a long time to get this shot ( 3 years approx) they rarely land & open their wings like this, had about 2 seconds to get this capture.

Cold December light ( xmas) Ship of the Fens.

My blue eyed boy. He's 6'2" & I can still outrun him, just as well as he'll kill me for this

And last of all a personal favourite of mine, gosh I had to work hard to get this shot but I musnt Crow about it

dammit I wish I had taken this shot !!

I probably have broken the rules

    Default The Blues

A watering hole in sight ....

There ... I knew it was a watering hole

    Floatation device acquired ...

    Floatation device installed ...

.... fifth ... and finally the blues of Heartbreak ...

Ooer. I think Photobucket is having a problem (they seem to think there's been one since Sunday). I can't see or access any of my photos today. The links on SOTP seem to work still. Is anyone else having trouble?

Couple of ones from one of my old blogs went missing a few weeks back. I ought to chase them.

Not just me then, been having trouble with it all day. Finally got my photos uploaded, but they're all showing as faulty. Server seemed to be down earlier. To be honest, I've found PB has been getting slower & slower in recent weeks. I'm hoping they've been upgrading servers, and it'll all sort itself out....but I'm two blogs behind now and have a reputation to keep up!!!

    Wow. I never noticed!

I wonder which one was my 10,000th? Probably some rubbish about airbags, sheep or hats. I must pay more attention.

Am I catching up with TGB yet??

Default Thought this might come in handy one day.

I've absolutely no idea what this is. It appeared between two outdoor pictures of standing stones in Cornwall. If you've any ideas...

I found this floating in the middle of Windermere and took it to be an appropriate omen to sod the bank balance and go and buy the new boat that I'd been oggling for far too long.

On the same day I came across a drowned squirrel, I decided that that was not an omen of any sort!!

As with everything just good technique and a sound knowledge of your equipment.

The effect is achieved using an almost black filter on the camera which cuts down the amount of light getting through to the sensor. For the technically minded this is a x10 neutral density filter plus two graduated nuetral density filters. The result of adding all these filters is that I can get a 4 minute exposure at midday and bacause of this the waves get evened out and produce this mirror effect. This also produces the 'misty' effect where the waves lap up against the ribs of the wreck. An added bonus is that the surface of the muddy waters also tend to reflect the blues from the sky much more.

To get this shot I stood for almost half an hour with a tripod and camera in 3 to 4 feet of water as the tide came in around me. I think I tried about 8 test shots before I got the exposure correct. Mad I know, but the results are worth it.

EXIF data shows 240seconds exposure at f20.

Ah, I see. Not that I understand!! That's some serious kit then. Blooming nice photo though, and I can't help thinking it would be a rare day to see the Bristol Channel that blue, and even rarer to see it that calm, especially on the same day...
