    The Inuit use lamps and cookers like that filled with whale oil or walrus oil. They used to be made from bone before all the boat people landed.

    Interesting find, and something simple to do too.

    Wandering OT a bit (sorry philipoakley) but Lloyds comments put me in mind of this picture ...

    I've recently been doing some experiments with scallop shells, just to test the ideas of early lamps too - for authenticity I should have been using moss and (probably) cave bear fat, but as I have a choice, I used a synthetic wax instead.

    Going completely OT now, but there is some interesting stuff on that making things site, he's got a good eye for a neat bit of soldering too. I found this bit of advice entertaining:

    "If there's a muffled bang and the house lights dip momentarily, then you may need to call a computer service engineer."

    If you are short on cave bear fat try Bacon grease it is sort of similar and would work with the metal version too.
