    Default Loch Achray 28-30th December

Once again we are having a meet up at Loch Achray on the FC site. There will be some people coming from BCUK and it will be a chance to get out after the excesses of Christmas and before the New Year ones

The site is available from the 28th to the 30th December. That is the Thursday, Friday & Saturday between Christmas and New Year.
If anyone wants to stay longer or arrive earlier it should be able to be arranged. Hopefully these dates will meant those of us on holiday can come during the week and those with just the weekend off can attend on the Saturday.

As usual there is no official events it is just a case of coming along and having a good time with friends.

Might make it up on friday night.

Anyone taking a wander down the river to Loch Venachar should beware.
About 150m after Brig o' Michael there were two fallen trees at a quickish bit.
During the autumn there was a gap about 1.5m wide but you had to duck under one of the trees. With recent levels I doubt if there's any way through at all(unless the water's shifted them)....
....although there may be a way around the big one on river right, which was too shallow at the time so I didn't really look at it.
Picture yourself in a boat on a river,

Is anyone planning to put in at Achray and then paddle down the river into Venachar and take out at the Callander end ?

Another question, how's the water supply ? Do you bring your own in ? Boil loch water ?

Just a reminder to all that one of my scouts got hospitalised with a water bourne bug at Invertrosachs, we don't know if it was from the loch (Venachar) or the piped water supply, so make sure you either carry your water in or boil/treat as required, make sure the kids (and adults) cover up any open cuts or grazes when on the loch.

I'm sure that MK has arranged this meet as a punishment for my naugtiness about Quentin, I've been hoping for a meet to try out the new hammocks from the group buy, and he's arranged it for the exact day I go on holiday to Italy!

Sorry I'll miss it, I shan't tell young Iain about it as he had such a great time there in October he'll probably suggest cancelling the skiing holiday!
This would result in Mrs. Narc tearing out my living organs from my still twiching body as an example to him. Hope you all have a great time, see you at the next one.

Well, Jac, Reece and I have a tentative plan to do a run up your way - LL like last year - between Christmas and NY, so we may be tempted to drop in on you (or you on us...)

I asked Stuart this morning and he did not know. Since the FC is shut between Christmas and New Year I will have the key from this Thursday.

I might be able to pop up a day early but leave early or if Graham is going up early I could meet him with the key in Glasgow.

Hmmm. Good point. Wonder if it's flooded ?

Wonder if there is a hotel or homeowner we could phone.

Is there not a hotel on the banks, northside I think ?

It's less than an hr from me so I could check it out this weekend.

It is not really a problem, if the site is flooded we just camp further up the hill. We have the whole forest drive to ourselves, pretty much, so we can be flexible about where to camp.

Okay, just thought it was only the beach bit on the blogg photos from the last meet.

So we actually drive in then unload canoes at the site or
do we park across the loch and paddle into the site ?
I'm gonna try to arrange a driver to drop me of at the north side
paddle into the campsite, then paddle out along the river and along Venachar
and get picked up at the Callander end before the weir.

The key to the gate is going to be chained to the gate post and secured with a combination lock. So you just need to release the key unlock the gate then lock up the gate and key again.

PM me if you want the combination for the lock. For those there the last time it is the same combination as before

I'm going to be there for a while tomorrow and then do an overnight trip later on in the week. There are a few people there already with more coming and going during the next couple of days.

The key was very stiff so the gate has been left closed but unlocked so there should be no problem getting in.

Some very big gusts last night, so I hope those campers/hammocks were ok.

Everyone seemed dry enough when I arrived today. The big tarp was even still up.

During today the weather was not bad but everyone was leaving today. I think it was only Henry who had been planning a longer stay but he decided to cut it short.

The weather kept us away, although it never got quite as bad as forecast. Ah well, we'll get out canoeing at some point soon!
