    Hi and welcome

Have you looked up the British Waterways website http://www.waterscape.com/index.html

Lots of info about canals and rivers. Also lets you know the authority overseeing them and where you may need to get a license to use the waterways.

I live in Scotland so I don't really know much about access in England.
But this should do for starters.

    Hi Dave

Welcome to Song of the Paddle.

I think your best bet is to join the BCU. Membership automatically gets you a licence to use the canals and some rivers. They also have local access officers who can tell you what water you can paddle and how difficult it is.

    Default License Required

Hi Dave I have just joined the site and am working through all the introductions. You are correct you need a license to travel on English waterways. You can get a License by joining the British Canoe Union http://www.bcu.org.uk By for now!
