Hello all, I am hoping to travel around the 'Elftedentocht' route in Friesland, the Netherlands, next May 2011. It's about 210kms in length and I want to travel around it by canoe (or dare I say it here?) rowing boat. I know the area a little bit and find the Dutch people to be truely wonderful. Any information anyone could give me about the waterways etc. would be gratefully recieved. Infomation like; Are the landowners in Friesland as friendly to campers as the "Get off my land!" farmers are over here in England? :Smilie_tent: Thanks for any replies.

Hey all;

having canoed across ireland i've got a bit of a bug to cross other countries. Obvious choice seems across scotland down the great glen. Some really good bloggs of this route but my instinct is telling me that its not really the coast at Fort william.

Was considering starting further out 'to sea' near oban but it looks like there are are strong currents around there and i dont want to die. How far along is safe for may/june paddling? in a 16 foot disco with airbags?

Alternatively it appears that you could canoe from Newton of Ardloe down the river (not up the waterfall obviously) and into Loch Sheil and then with a short portage (or hitchhike down the A830 with a canoe) join Loch eil and arrive to meet the opening of the canal at Fort William.

Has anyone done this or know the area that can give any advice? Or am i being a bit puritanical and you think i should just set out from Fort William?

Just thinking out loud are there any routes to cross England? I was thinking from lilverpool to leeds on the L-L canal and then down the river from Leeds? Any other ideas?

Griff

I have been fooling around with Google maps and have had an idea. I have started a map for myself on Google maps, with places that I have taken the family kayaking and have parked.

This Map has 6 Carparks with notes on it, and I can invite people to participate in it and give them full access to it to edit and use it. Google maps can then be used to send the location straight to a SatNav when you have connected it to you computer!

Sounds good to me, but would other people want access to it to contribute and Share their local knowledge.

It looks like you will have to PM your Email address so that I can add you to the list.

I've put up a few blogs on the Nene over the past two years & always been amazed that I see so few other open boats.

A new canoe hire company has just opened up on the Nene which seems to only hire out Canadians - according to their site you can do anything from half a day to five days and even camp at their base at Ditchford.

I have no connection with them and haven't used them but thought it might be of interest to anyone thinking of beginning open-boating.
We have now moved and would like to know some easy routes around buckinghamshire or perhaps stratford upon avon area.
We have not had to battle with wiers and locks yet and arent sure how to do this so a straight forward bit of pretty river would be perfect!
Any ideas please?
It sounds like an interesting and easy paddle, but I wonder two things...

1) Could we realistically make it last 2 days paddling?
2) Is it possible to link through to River Teith? I heard Falls of Leny (an Leny generally) is more Kayak than Open Canoe territory.

Would love to hear some first hand views...
