Hello,

A friend and I were looking to build the free bateau plywood canoe just for a bit of fun, I have a couple of questions:

1) We are both over-6ft 21 year old guys, will the 16ft canoe ("NC16") take both of us or are we better building the 14ft and going solo?

2) How long do you think this will take? Bearing in mind that we are pretty much just going to work on it for a few days, and don't have any experience building canoes. (As in: 2 days, or two weeks!)

Thank you for your help!

Harry

Then on to Low Wray, where we found time between the usual walking, scrambling and rock climbing to take out big-cousin's old kayak:
To regret not bringing the canoe-sailing bits to join these OCSG and SoTP folk:
To go poling up the rivers:

To paddle to Bowness for ice-cream:
...and to manage at least a couple of outings with mum in the tandem:
We had to head back home via the other side of the family and drop mummy off... but before long we were back up on Windermere - this time on the rather prettier southern end:

We paddled in a stiff breeze from the south end up to Bowness and back... finding time during tea breaks to lark around on the shore:

The next day was spent larking around some more:

We then headed over the passes to Wasdale... and after a day climbing Great Gable we found a few hours to paddle the most glorious of all the Cumbrian lakes:

Hi
I want to buy a canoe. The only options I have are Pelican or Old Town

I was thinking of getting an Old Town, but can't decide what model to buy. So the models are:
Charles River and Camper 16

I'm new to canoe. I just tried once. It was rent and the canoe was Pelican Explorer 146 DLX.

It's pretty good but what moved towards the Old Town is weight. It's 10 kg lighter and at the same time is longer.

So what would you suggest for me?

We have Dnepr river here but also lots of smaller ones. The main concern for me is which one will holds the waves from motor boats the best? The Pelican was quite good. At first I turned the bow to the waves but when I got used to paddle and felt confident in the canoe I even decided to see how it will hold the wave from the side. Had no problem with it at all.

So I will use it solo, in tandem with my wife or friend, and sometimes there will be three of us.
It's for day trips as well as for some multi day, camping trips.

Thank you for any input

Alex

I'm starting to plan the longest solo trip I've done. It's a 500Km. stretch of the Wabasca River in north central Alberta. The Wabasca is a remote and seldom traveled river, with limited access points. Because of the nature of this river, I'm doing a lot more detailed planning than I have in the past. And I'll be looking for your help.

I would really like suggestions from each of you to ensure I don't miss an important point. I have googled the river and not found much. I did contact a local canoe outfitter, but they didn't have the experience with the river I was hoping for. Believe it or not, the most information I've found was in a geological survey published in 1893. Sometime next week my 1:50,000 maps should be arriving for my first map reccee's.

I don't know how to read these flow charts. Can someone translate them for me or tell my how to read them?
http://www.r-arcticnet.sr.unh.edu/v4...t.pl?Point=790
http://www.r-arcticnet.sr.unh.edu/v3.0/Points/P794.html

As I move through the planning process I'll be using this thread for questions and observations as they arise. So again any and all useful tips and ideas will be greatly appreciated. If you are concerned about my safety on this trip , you can help me plan a successful trip. I am going.

Thanks everyone.

I think the criteria should be to imagine a late ,wet paddle where you have to get the tent up and then get a meal down you, using the minimum of pots for time and cleaning up ,so that you can then just hit the sack.

Any Helpful Suggestions?

And I don't mean I'm selling lots of sausages!!

Selling all this stuff strictly for pick up at the big meet or from my house :D I'll be at the big meet on Sunday so you can collect in person there too. Payment is cash on the day or by paypal. So first dibs goes to people who can pick up at the big meet or can pick up from my house (Falkirk area). If there are any items left on Monday, I'll readvertise them on here and post them out after that. First to say yes please by post on here or PM gets the item. Please no postal shouts before Monday!

 1. Old Town kids paddle - £15 SPF TC

Looks like the 3rd one down here 48” overall, 28” shaft, a 20” blade 5.5” wide. In pretty good nick with maybe 3 or 4 chips on the varnish. No signs of water damage to the wood underneath.

 2. Thule 135cm roof bars, 750 footpack and 2 adapter kits, lockable with 2 keys - £30

I have 2 kits, one was for a 52 plate Mazda 6 (part code 1302) and the other was on it when I got it, I think for a peugeot of some description (part coded 425 and 426) The idea with these is that they should fit most gutterless cars, you only need to change the kit to suit your car. I have no idea what will work with what but there's more info on the thule site here and it even configures it for you (I checked this and it came out correct for my old mazda). The bars themselves are worth about 30 quid without locks but please check to make sure they'll fit your car.

 3. Negrini archery hardcase - £10

Plastic hard case for a recurve bow, could also be used for other things. The foam is cut for my bow but is readily replaceable, all clips working ok.

 4. Vinyl Mast foot - £5 SPF MK

This is the endless river one, unused, straight out the packet. No glue with it though...?

 5. Childs selfinflating mattress - £10 SPF HO

Used a couple of times by NSLC before he grew. Don't know the manufacturer, nothing I could see on it. I'm certain it has no holes, I'll check it though. Been stored flat under my bed for the last couple of years. 120Cm x 50cm x 3 or 4 cm (thick enough for a kid) comes with bag and packs down to 25x15cm

 6. True North Big Tarp - £60 SPF HO

This is the Rolls Royce of tarps, more info here my review is here with loads of pics. Never been used in anger, just in the garden.

7. Another tarp, this one is one of Andywinks - £50

I reviewed this here and it's a whopper, 4.5mx4m!! 4oz nylon, seams are taped, very good build quality. Used in anger once (by 2 girl guides... honestly!!)

 8. North Face gear loft - £5

This is a cool wee net thing you suspend from your tent roof that you can put your kit in, I used to hang it from my hammock ridgeline but don't have a ridgeline anymore!! It's 15”x18” with a couple of wee pockets

 9. Pocket cooker - £10

This is a fold up wood burning stove, they used to be available in the UK but I can't find a source now so maybe a bit rarer. I usually wrap this in a bit of newspaper (tinder) and put it a pocket from pair of moleskins which I'll include (I may even chuck in the newspaper! ;)) Works really pretty well but it's been replaced by my yukon firebox so redundant.

 10. German mountain rucksack - £10

Heavy canvas, good buckles, used it for a long while and has a nice lived in look! Must be about 40L+ with side pockets. Has been replaced by something equally canvas but much more expensive! Will remove the archery badge on it.

 11. Camelback bottle pouch black - £10

This guy was part of my belt kit for a while then I used to clip it to my yoke but don't use it anymore. All MOLLE'ed up for those that use it.

 12. Paddle your own canoe - £5

I liked this book, wee bit airy fairy in places but a good read for a beginner/intermediate and in great nick. Amazon linky

 13. Webtex Medic Pouch OG - £20

This is pretty cool, it's got more ways to attach it to something else than you can dream of, belts, zips onto bergen as a side pouch, strap for a bag, webbing thingys, molle style bits and bobs, etc etc. Inside it's got elastic loops, mesh bags on velcro, a big mesh bag and a clear plastic sleeve. Had this down as a grab bag but prefer my response pack so it was a camp kitchen for a wee while... Info here

 Mixed bunch now;

14. British army bush hat in desert size 60cm - £5
15. US army desert hat, never worn outside size 7.5 - £15
note both the above fit me but I prefer my ACU one.
16. Surefire G2 nitrolon torch black ,VGC, box ripped - £20
17. Paracord survival bracelet 7” circumference (ie small, used to be my lads) - £5
18a and b. A couple of my early sheath attempts, one for a Fallkniven F1 and one for a folder and firesteel – free! you can have them, they're a bit ugly!! gone - TC

 19. Selling one of these Canadian Belt Knives (over 18s only please!)

I handled these myself, more info here These are probably 01 tool steel made by Stu Barker an ace maker who's off travelling just now! SMbanghead The one for sale is handled in maple, the other is yew. Overall length is 220mm, blade is about 100mm. These are nice general purpose camp knives and very handy for food prep due to the shape, not so good for whittling as about 4mm thick. I do not have any sheaths for them but will either supply a blank bit of 4mm veg tan leather free of charge or if you can wait a couple of weeks I can make one up to your spec for an additional £25. I've 3 of these knives (don't ask!) and I'm keeping one, they are very good.

The yew one is already sold
The maple one is not 100% perfect, minor liner misalignment you'll struggle to notice it but I do! so it's £60 (the blade alone cost £60!!)

 20. Last up is a lovely Duluth Northwoods pack - £120

Very, very good condition, used outdoors maybe 3 times. Still got plastic pack liner (unused) and paperwork. This is a great pack for stuffing full of stuff!! swallows up all the sleeping bags, hammocks, underquilts, mats, food, clothes etc etc without even blinking. Like all the big packs, really, really hard to fill and it's great being able to carry almost everything in one trip!! £200 in the UK at the moment. It's the big guy in the background here (Kettle sleeve and other stuff not included and I'll remove the pepe and Q patches)

That's all folks!

Post or PM for first dibs (strictly by timestamp!) and collect in person for now! Here comes inbox chaos!

Hi Guys and Girls.

Just joined up on the forum as I have decided to get into open canoeing. I've been into bushcraft and fishing for years and a canoe seems like a great way to travel around and combine the two.

A mate and I are planning a canoeing trip to Sweden next summer so I'll be putting a post up in due course to see if anyone has any good pointers on paddling there.

All the best
This last picture is dated the day the tree was cut down. Both paddles are one piece of Basswood. This was my first time at paddle making and I wanted to use a tree from my property. The Basswood was very easy to work with for a 1st timer. No power tools were used to makes these, well a chainsaw for falling the tree and cutting out the rough shape of the paddle a skill saw was used.
